Lore

Biology

Furfrou is 1.2 m tall and weighs 28 kg. In its Natural Form it has thick white fur over a black body, fluffier around the head and tail. Left alone, the Pokédex says, its fur grows longer and longer, and trimming it makes Furfrou both more elegant and quicker in its movements.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia calls Furfrou very intelligent and loyal. The Pokédex says there was an era when aristocrats competed to have the most exquisitely trimmed Furfrou. By Legends: Z-A, Lumiose City has a Furfrou League where the Elite Four, Champion and challengers all use Furfrou.

Habitat

The Pokédex places its history in Kalos and names no habitat. Furfrou is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it lives in Jaune District and Centrico Plaza.

Powers

Its only Ability is Fur Coat, which halves damage from physical attacks. It has ten forms: the Natural Form and nine trims, called Heart, Star, Diamond, Debutante, Matron, Dandy, La Reine, Kabuki and Pharaoh. In the games a trim wears off after five days. Furfrou fights with Sucker Punch, Cotton Guard and Baby-Doll Eyes, and its 102 base Speed and 90 Special Defense make it a quick, bulky Normal type.

Name origin

Furfrou may combine 'fur' and 'frou-frou', meaning fancy or fussy. The Japanese name is Trimmien (トリミアン), which may blend 'trimming', chien (French for 'dog') and très bien ('excellent').

Design inspiration

Furfrou appears to be based on a poodle, with its long Natural Form coat perhaps drawing on Afghan hounds. Bulbapedia reads the nine trims as three themes: simple shapes, social types such as the Debutante, Matron and Dandy, and cultural styles from French royalty, Kabuki theatre and Ancient Egypt. These are fan readings.

In the games

In X and Y, its first games, Friseur Furfrou on Lumiose City's Vernal Avenue clips it for ₽500. In Legends: Z-A, Mirte in Jaune Sector 6 does the trimming after a side mission, and Furfrou is also in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Furfrou debuted in 'Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!'. In 'Grooming Furfrou!', Pokémon Stylist Jessica wins over a Furfrou that first refused to accept her, in an episode that shows off four trims.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Furfrou is the only Pokémon with a catch rate of 160.
  • It was revealed by accident in a Pokémon Direct on 4 September 2013.
  • Fur Coat belongs to Furfrou alone: Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon could have it before Generation VII, and the game data lists none now.
  • Princess Allie forfeited a battle in 'Awakening the Sleeping Giant!' because Pikachu's Thunderbolt ruined her Furfrou's fur and she would not let it fight without looking beautiful.
