Lore

Biology

Gardevoir is a tall humanoid whose body flows like a gown, 1.6 m tall and 48.4 kg. Most of it is white, with green hair, arms and gown lining. Its hair curls over its face, short spikes behind its red eyes make it look masked, and a red, fin-like plate passes through its chest and out of its back.

Behaviour

Gardevoir can see the future, and its strength is greatest when it defends its Trainer. By the Pokédex's account it supports itself with psychic power and so apparently feels no pull from gravity. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex adds that it devotes itself to a master it has grown fond of.

Habitat

Urban areas, according to the Pokédex. In Scarlet and Violet it is found on Glaseado Mountain and in Kitakami (The Teal Mask), and in Legends: Z-A in Wild Zone 20.

Powers

Gardevoir has Synchronize or Trace, with Telepathy hidden. It knows Dazzling Gleam on evolving and learns Psychic at level 42 and Moonblast at 49, and it can use Calm Mind, Wish and Healing Wish. Holding Gardevoirite, it Mega Evolves: Mega Gardevoir turns almost entirely white with a wide bridal-style gown, and its chest plate splits in two, which the Pokédex says is where its strongest psychic power is released. Its Mega Ability is Pixilate, and its Special Attack rises from 125 to 165.

Name origin

Gardevoir may blend the French garde or garder ('to guard') with devoir ('duty') and voir ('to see'). The Japanese name is Sirnight (サーナイト), which may combine 'sir', 'knight', 'sight', the nymph Syrinx and a pun on 'saa, naito' ('come here, Knight').

Design inspiration

Gardevoir seems to draw on a principal ballet dancer and a knight: the gown and pointed legs suggest dance, while the bob of hair resembles a helmet and the spikes a masquerade mask. Bulbapedia also suggests guardian angels, ghostly White Ladies and Japanese anesama dolls, and the Mega form may suggest a ballroom dancer or an elven mage. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Kirlia evolves into Gardevoir at level 30.

In the games

Diantha, the Champion of Kalos, always sends out Gardevoir last in X and Y and Mega Evolves it at the first chance. Gardevoir first appeared in Hoenn in Ruby and Sapphire, and belongs to Team Charm in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.

In the anime

Diantha's Gardevoir debuted in 'The Bonds of Evolution!' and can Mega Evolve. In the film 'Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel', Kimia's main Pokémon is a Shiny Gardevoir that can also Mega Evolve.
