Lore
Biology
Surskit is a blue insectoid with a round body, four long, skinny legs and a yellow cap and one antenna on its head. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 1.7 kg. The Pokédex says oil from its feet lets it walk on water as if skating, and a sweet scent from its head draws in prey.
Behaviour
Surskit slides across the water as if on skates. It squabbles with Dewpider over food, since their habitat and diet are similar, and after an evening shower groups gather on puddles, even in towns.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it lives on weed-choked ponds and in marshes. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province and across Kitakami.
Diet
The Pokédex says it lives on tiny organisms in ponds and lakes.
Powers
Its Ability Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, and the hidden Rain Dish heals it a little each turn in rain. It knows Water Gun, Bubble Beam and Quick Attack, and can lay a Sticky Web or pass boosts with Baton Pass. Its base Speed of 65 is its best stat.
Name origin
Surskit may combine 'surface' or 'surf' with 'skitter'. The Japanese name is Ametama (アメタマ), which may blend amenbo (water strider) with amedama (candy), or ame (rain) with tama (sphere).
Design inspiration
Surskit looks like a water strider. Bulbapedia adds that its round body also recalls a water chestnut and a curling stone, which are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Surskit evolves into Masquerain at level 22.
In the games
Viola, the Bug-type Gym Leader of Santalune City, opens her Gym battle in X and Y with a level 10 Surskit. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, appears in 1-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, and is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Surskit debuted in 'Maxxed Out!', befriended by a boy named Max who looked just like May's little brother. Viola's Surskit beat Ash's Pikachu with Signal Beam in 'A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!'.
