Lore
Biology
Garganacl is a large two-legged Pokémon of compact rock salt and layered rock, 2.3 m (7'07") tall and 240 kg (529.1 lbs). Its shoulders are tall, three-stepped blocks of white salt that cover the sides of its head, with a taller block behind. Its blocky arms and legs are striped like rock strata, its three-fingered hands hang close to the ground, and its torso is tiny next to its limbs. Square patches of salt dot its body.
Behaviour
Garganacl is gentle with the hurt. The Pokédex says it rubs its fingertips together over injured Pokémon, sprinkling salt that quickly heals even severe wounds. Many Pokémon crowd round hoping to lick its mineral-rich salt, and the Legends: Z-A Pokédex adds that rock salt taken from it helps keep people healthy.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet, Serebii lists wild Garganacl only in Area Zero, a late-game area.
Powers
It learns Hammer Arm the moment it evolves, starts with Block, Wide Guard and Rock Blast, picks up Salt Cure at level 24, and later gains Stone Edge, Earthquake and Explosion. Its Abilities are Purifying Salt and Sturdy, with Clear Body hidden. With 100 HP and a base Defense of 130, the highest of any Rock type introduced in Generation IX, it is a huge, slow wall that is hard to knock down.
Name origin
Garganacl may combine gargantuan with NaCl, and it might also borrow from tabernacle. The Japanese name is Kyojiohn (キョジオーン), which may combine kyojin (giant), shio (salt) and geo- (earth).
Design inspiration
Garganacl appears to be based on rock-salt crystals and strata. Its large humanoid build, and its gentle, earthy role, may recall Hebrew golems, and its stepped shoulders resemble a ziggurat or the Pyramids of Güímar, or perhaps the hopper crystals found in coarse salt. Its healing may play on 'curing', which means both preserving and healing. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Naclstack evolves into Garganacl at level 38, and Garganacl is the final form.
In the games
Garganacl turns up in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. In Legends: Z-A it is wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in 4-star Rock-type zones and a 5-star special zone.
In the anime
Sidian's Garganacl debuted in 'Reunion at the Ancient Castle!', and it made its first Terastallization, into the Rock type, in 'Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!'.
