Lore

Biology

Giratina has a grey draconic body with a black stripe marked by five red bands, a gold crown-like head with two horns, and gold half-rings along its neck and tail. In its Altered Forme it is 4.5 m tall and weighs 750 kg. Bulbapedia notes titles such as 'the banished Pokémon' and 'Arceus's shadow', and says it has been reported in ancient cemeteries.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia describes Giratina as highly aggressive and territorial, which likely helped get it banished. The Pokédex says its home is a place where common sense is twisted and strange, and Bulbapedia notes it is regarded as a match for Dialga and Palkia in strength. It can tear holes in reality, and its space-time rifts can drive Dialga and Palkia into a frenzy.

Habitat

Giratina is said to dwell on the flip side of our world, in what the games call the Distortion World and the anime calls the Reverse World. In the games it is found in Turnback Cave in Diamond and Pearl and in the Distortion World in Platinum.

Powers

No other Pokémon is known to learn Shadow Force by levelling up, a move in which it vanishes and strikes from the shadows. It also learns Shadow Claw, Dragon Claw and Earth Power. Altered Forme has the Ability Pressure, with Telepathy hidden. Origin Forme, said to be its true form, is serpentine and 6.9 m tall, with Levitate as its Ability and Attack and Special Attack of 120 instead of 100. It keeps this form in the Distortion World or while holding the Griseous Orb or Griseous Core. Its base HP of 150 makes it very bulky.

Name origin

Giratina may come from the Spanish platina ('platinum'), fitting the game it starred in, mixed with a corruption of 'Gila monster'. It may also involve 'guilty' or the Japanese girari ('glaring'). The Japanese name is Giratina (ギラティナ).

Design inspiration

Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru have said Giratina and the Distortion World personify antimatter. Altered Forme resembles a European dragon or sauropod, and Origin Forme may draw on a Chinese dragon or the Oomukade, a giant centipede in Japanese folklore. The animal comparisons are fan readings, not official statements.

In the games

Giratina is the box mascot of Platinum, shown in Origin Forme, and the last Pokémon in that game's Sinnoh Pokédex. It is a boss in Legends: Arceus, and in Black 2 and White 2 the Gym Leader Fantina uses an Origin Forme Giratina in a downloadable Pokémon World Tournament event. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Giratina debuted in the film 'Giratina and the Sky Warrior', where it seeks revenge on Dialga for damaging its home, the Reverse World, and switches between Altered and Origin Formes as it travels. In 'Arceus and the Jewel of Life' it appears alongside Dialga and Palkia for the first time.

Fun facts

  • Giratina's type pairing is the only one weak to both of its own types, since Ghost and Dragon are each weak to themselves; the Dreepy line shares it.
  • Diamond and Pearl have no Giratina orb at all, as the Griseous Orb first appeared in Platinum.
  • In Diamond and Pearl, Giratina is level 70 while Dialga and Palkia are level 47; Platinum reverses this.
  • The symbols of the Platinum and Lost Origin Pokémon TCG expansions look like Giratina's Origin Forme viewed head-on.
