Lore

Biology

Golisopod is a hunched, humanoid arthropod, 2.0 m (6'07") tall and 108 kg (238.1 lb), in pale purple with silver plating and a skirt of armour like a samurai's. It has three pairs of arms: two slim pairs tipped with small black claws and a longer rear pair with much bigger forearms. The Pokédex says its claws can be extended and retracted at will.

Behaviour

Golisopod fights with skill and no mercy: the Pokédex says it takes advantage of every opening and ends the fight with the small claws on the front of its body. Away from battle it is calm, meditating peacefully in caves deep under the sea, and it is sometimes accompanied by Wimpod. When it fights Grapploct, the Pokédex says, the loser becomes the winner's meal.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in sunken ships and in holes in the seabed. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet; in Legends: Z-A it is a Mega Dimension DLC Pokémon, found in Hyperspace Lumiose, and Bulbapedia lists a trade for the base game.

Powers

Its only Ability, Emergency Exit, pulls it out of battle when its HP drops below half. In Generation VII its signature move was First Impression, a very strong strike that only works on its first turn out, backed by Liquidation, X-Scissor and Swords Dance. With 125 base Attack and 140 base Defense it is a bulky physical attacker. Mega Golisopod, introduced in the Mega Dimension DLC, is a Bug and Steel type with the Ability Tough Claws. It pummels foes with four main arms, then finishes them with extra arms hidden behind its waist armour, and its claws can be fired off as projectiles.

Name origin

Golisopod may combine 'Goliath' with 'isopod'. The Japanese name is Gusokumusha (グソクムシャ), which Bulbapedia reads as daiō-gusokumushi (the giant isopod), gusoku ('fully equipped') and musha ('warrior').

Design inspiration

Kensaku Nabana designed Golisopod. It appears to be based on the giant isopod dressed in samurai armour. Bulbapedia suggests Mega Golisopod may draw on cyborgs and walking tanks, or on the asura, a many-armed war demigod of East Asian tradition. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Golisopod evolves from Wimpod at level 30, with no other condition.

In the games

Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC gave Golisopod a Mega Evolution, which needs the Golisopite. It debuted in Sun and Moon, where you get one by evolving Wimpod, and in Sword and Shield it lives at the Lake of Outrage and, with the Expansion Pass, Challenge Beach.

In the anime

Guzma's Golisopod debuted in 'The Dealer of Destruction!', where its Emergency Exit Ability returned it to its Poké Ball before its battle with Ash's Pikachu had a winner. It battled again at the Manalo Conference.

Fun facts

  • Designer Kensaku Nabana has said Golisopod took him more than six months to design, which Bulbapedia calls an average time for a Pokémon.
  • Farfetch'd, an unrelated Normal and Flying bird, can pass First Impression down to its Eggs.
  • Mega Golisopod's base stat total of 630 tops every other Bug-type Pokémon, according to Bulbapedia.
