Lore

Biology

Wimpod is a small arthropod, 0.5 m (1'08") tall and 12 kg (26.5 lb), with a purple body under four silver plates, large yellow eyes, a prickly tail and eight short legs. It spits a poisonous liquid when threatened, and the Pokédex says its flailing legs leave a sparkling clean path behind it.

Behaviour

Wimpod live in swarms that keep constant watch and scatter the instant an enemy appears. Each one whirs its legs at high speed to flee anything that comes close, though Bulbapedia says curiosity can still draw it to people who stand perfectly still. The Pokédex says Murkrow and Meowth chase it because it picks up coins.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives everywhere from beaches to the seabed. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet; in Legends: Z-A it is a wild Pokémon only in Hyperspace Lumiose, in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Diet

The Pokédex calls it a natural scavenger that eats anything edible, rotten food included.

Powers

Its only Ability, Wimp Out, switches it out of battle when its HP falls below half. With 25 base HP and a best stat of 80 Speed, it is mainly a stepping stone to Golisopod.

Name origin

Wimpod may combine 'wimp' with 'pod', the taxonomic word for 'foot' found in 'isopod'. The Japanese name is Kosokumushi (コソクムシ), which Bulbapedia reads as ko ('small'), soku ('feet') or kosoku ('cowardly'), plus mushi ('bug').

Design inspiration

Wimpod appears to blend a trilobite with an isopod, with a hint of silverfish, which flee when startled. Its spotless trail may nod to robot vacuum cleaners. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Wimpod evolves into Golisopod at level 30, with no other condition.

In the games

Swarms of Wimpod scuttle across the beaches and Poni Wilds of Sun and Moon, where it debuted. In Sword and Shield it turns up in Galar Mine No. 2 and across the Wild Area.

In the anime

A swarm debuted in 'Partner Promises!' at Treasure Island, trying to steal Poké Beans from Ash's backpack. Rotom Dex calls Wimpod nature's vacuum cleaners.
