Lore

Biology

Goodra is 2.0 m tall and weighs 150.5 kg. It is a plump, bipedal, draconic Pokémon with pale purple skin, bright green eyes and green spots on its cheeks and tail. Two pairs of horns sit on its head, the rear pair longer and curving down its neck, and the Pokédex says they can be pushed out and pulled back. Slime drips from its chin and arms, and a layer of fat beneath makes attacks slide off.

Behaviour

Goodra is meek and friendly. The Pokédex says it gets teased because it seems weak, but whoever teases it gets a swat from its tail and horns. It often misunderstands instructions and looks dazed, which many Trainers find adorable. Left alone it oozes tears, and the Violet entry says an enraged Goodra can lash its tail hard enough to send a dump truck flying.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it loves rain and walks plains and mountains on rainy days. In Scarlet and Violet, Goodra appears in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it roams Wild Zone 20 in Centrico Plaza, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds the Hisuian form to Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Its Abilities are Sap Sipper and Hydration, with Gooey hidden. Draco Meteor, Outrage and Power Whip back up a huge Special Defense of 150 in a base stat total of 600. Hisuian Goodra is Steel and Dragon, 1.7 m and 334.1 kg, with a metal shell whose hardness it controls and which it rolls into like a rubber ball when something bad happens. It swaps Hydration for Shell Armor and trades Speed (60 against 80) for Defense (100 against 70).

Name origin

Goodra may combine 'goo' with 'dragon' or 'Hydra', and may hint at 'good' for its kindly nature. The Japanese name is Numelgon (ヌメルゴン), possibly from numeru ('to be slippery'), 'gel' and 'dragon'.

Design inspiration

Given its Dragon type, long body and retractable horns, Goodra probably draws on Lou Carcolh, a serpent-like mollusc from French folklore. A fan reading is the shussebora, a Japanese yokai in which a trumpet shell spends 1,000 years each in the mountains, on plains and at sea before becoming a dragon.

Evolution notes

Goodra is the end of the line, evolved from Sliggoo; the Hisuian form comes only from Hisuian Sliggoo.

In the games

Goodra is one of Champion Diantha's six Pokémon in X and Y, where it debuted and can only be obtained by evolving Sliggoo. It is a playable melee Defender in Pokémon UNITE, starting as Goomy and evolving at levels 5 and 8. Hisuian Goodra debuted in Legends: Arceus.

In the anime

Ash's Sliggoo evolved into Goodra in 'Good Friends, Great Training!', after using Rain Dance to help put out a big fire. Raihan's Goodra fought Ash's Gigantamax Gengar to a double knockout in 'Aim For The Eight!'.

  • In Pokémon Adventures, Zinnia uses a Goodra in her raid on Sea Mauville, and again in an attack on the Mossdeep Space Center.
