Lore

Biology

Graveler is 1.0 m tall and weighs 105 kg. It is a khaki boulder with a bumpy round body, a rocky crest above small eyes and mouth, and four arms with three-fingered hands, the second pair usually tucked against its chest.

Behaviour

Graveler is a slow walker, so it rolls to get about. It climbs mountains from the bottom to the top, then rolls back down, ignoring any object or hiker in the way. Bits chipping off as it tumbles do not bother it. If it falls into a river, the Pokédex says it explodes with its last gasp.

Habitat

It lives on mountain slopes and cliffs, in holes it gouges into sheer rock faces.

Diet

Rocks are its favourite food, especially moss-covered ones, and it eats about a ton a day.

Powers

Its Abilities are Rock Head and Sturdy, with Sand Veil hidden. It uses Rollout, Rock Throw and Explosion, and its base Defense is 115. Alolan Graveler is Rock and Electric, with yellow dravite crystals on its silvery body. It zaps obstacles aside as it rolls, and two colliding over food make a flash and boom that earn them the name 'the fireworks of the earth'. It has Magnet Pull or Sturdy, and the hidden Galvanize.

Name origin

Graveler may combine 'gravel' with 'traveler' or the suffix -er. The Japanese name is Golone (ゴローン), possibly from goron-goron, the sound of rolling rocks, and 'stone'.

Design inspiration

Graveler appears to be a living boulder, like an earth elemental, and its four arms may echo Hindu deities like Shiva or Vishnu. It could also be inspired by the tsuchikorobi, a Japanese 'tumbling monster' yōkai that rolls over travellers. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Graveler evolves from Geodude at level 25 and into Golem when traded, or with a Linking Cord.

In the games

A Generation I original, Graveler is found in Victory Road in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Scarlet and Violet it can be traded in, and The Teal Mask adds it to Kitakami. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A. In Pokémon Pokopia, a Graveler in Rocky Ridges teaches Ditto the move Rollout.

In the anime

Graveler debuted in 'The School of Hard Knocks', when Giselle used one to prove that Misty's win over her Pokémon was no fluke. Goh caught a Graveler on the Seafoam Islands in 'Battling in the Freezing Raid!'.

  • Boldore is its twin on paper: both are Rock types with a base stat total of 390 and Sturdy, evolve at level 25 and need a trade to finish.
