Lore
Biology
Hakamo-o is a 1.2 m, 47 kg reptile with a light grey body, dark grey limbs, red eyes and three yellow claws on every limb. Overlapping scale plates cover its forehead, neck, arms and tail. The Moon Pokédex says it sheds and regrows them all the time, and each new scale comes back harder and sharper than the last.
Behaviour
Hakamo-o leaves its fellows to train alone and goes wherever there are opponents. Before a fight it dances and clashes its scales together, then ends with a roar. It attacks without guarding itself, because its scales act as armour, so many get torn off. The Sword Pokédex says it shows its scarred, scaleless patches to beaten opponents, and the Scarlet entry says bare arms count as a mark of bravery.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it turns up wherever there are rivals to fight. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami Wilds, with Oni Mountain as a fixed spot.
Powers
Hakamo-o gains the Fighting type on evolving, and Dragon Dance, Outrage and Close Combat suit its all-out style. Its Abilities are the family's Bulletproof and Soundproof, with Overcoat hidden. Base Defense 90 stands out among its stats, which total 420.
Name origin
Hakamo-o may combine the haka, a Polynesian war dance, with the Hawaiian moʻo ('lizard' or 'dragon'). The Japanese name is Jyarango (ジャランゴ), which may combine jarajara (a jingling sound) and 'dragon'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Hakamo-o appears to be a theropod dinosaur with some ankylosaur features. Its ritual war cries may allude to the haka, and its scale-clanging may nod to cymbals and castanets. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Hakamo-o evolves from Jangmo-o at level 35 and becomes Kommo-o at level 45.
In the games
In Sun and Moon, where it debuted, Hakamo-o turns up in SOS Battles at Vast Poni Canyon. In Sword it lives at the Lake of Outrage and in Max Raid Battles, and the Expansion Pass adds Crown Tundra's Loop Lagoon. Scarlet and Violet get it by trade, with wild ones added by The Teal Mask, including 4 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Three Hakamo-o debuted in 'Family Determination!' as allies of a Totem Kommo-o. A Hakamo-o living in Vast Poni Canyon briefly battled Ash's Pikachu in 'Evolving Research!'.
