Lore

Biology

Jangmo-o is a 0.6 m, 29.7 kg dinosaur-like dragon with a black lower body, a light grey upper body and big red eyes. A heart-shaped yellow scale sits on its forehead and six loose scales hang around its shoulders. The Shield Pokédex says its scales are really fur that has hardened to metal, and the Scarlet entry says the head scale works for both offence and defence.

Behaviour

Jangmo-o lives and trains with its own kind. It smacks its scales against rocks or the ground to scare opponents and to call to friends, and a group makes quite a racket. The Sword Pokédex says they learn to battle by bashing their head scales against each other, and the Moon entry says they gain strength gradually from fighting one another.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in mountains with no trace of humans, and Bulbapedia says these are harsh places far from other Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Kitakami's Wistful Fields, Paradise Barrens and Kitakami Wilds.

Powers

Its Abilities are Bulletproof, which blocks ball and bomb moves, and Soundproof, which blocks sound moves, with Overcoat, which stops weather damage, as the Hidden Ability. It learns Dragon Claw, Dragon Dance and Outrage. Its base stat total is only 300, so it is all potential.

Name origin

Jangmo-o may blend 'jangling' with moʻo, the Hawaiian word for lizard or dragon. The Japanese name is Jyarako (ジャラコ), which may combine jarajara (a jingling sound), the Latin dracō ('dragon') and ko ('young animal').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Jangmo-o as a small ankylosaur, and the hardened-fur scales in the Shield Pokédex may hint at pangolins. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Jangmo-o evolves into Hakamo-o at level 35, which in turn becomes Kommo-o at level 45.

In the games

Jangmo-o is found at Vast Poni Canyon in Sun and Moon, where it debuted. In Sword and Shield it is a Sword exclusive, and Scarlet and Violet offer it by trade or Pokémon HOME, with wild ones arriving in The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Jangmo-o debuted in 'Family Determination!' among the Ally Pokémon of a Totem Kommo-o. Four reappeared in 'Revealing the Stuff of Legend!' and attacked Professor Burnet until Professor Kukui's Braviary warded them off.

Fun facts

  • According to Bulbapedia, Jangmo-o was the earliest design made for Generation VII.
  • Among the Dragon types introduced in Generation VII it is both the lightest and the shortest.
  • The Ultra Moon Pokédex says ancient warriors admired its valiant nature so much that they made it one of their own.
