Hattrem

Serene Pokémon · Psychic-type

Hattrem official artwork

Hattrem is a Psychic-type Pokémon, the Serene Pokémon, number 857 (#0857) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 4.8 kg.

Hattrem is the Serene Pokémon, but the calm is misleading: the Pokédex says it quietens anyone nearby who shows strong emotion by pummelling them with its braids, and one blow could knock out a professional boxer.

How to pronounce Hattrem

Hattrem is pronounced HAT-rem. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Hattrem is a pink Pokémon, 0.6 m tall and 4.8 kg, with a big, light blue bush of hair that rises to a crooked point like a witch's hat. Two big blue growths on the sides of the hair look like ponytails, and Bulbapedia says it stands on them and uses them as hands. Its black eyes have white pupils with pink highlights that look a little like cartoon hearts.

Behaviour

To Hattrem, strong emotions feel like incredibly loud noises, even happy ones, says the Scarlet Pokédex. The Shield entry says it uses its braids to pummel anyone in range until they quiet down.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives around Paldea's Glaseado Mountain, Tagtree Thicket and South Province, and in Kitakami's Wilds and Timeless Woods.

Powers

Its Abilities are Healer and Anticipation, with Magic Bounce hidden. It gets Brutal Swing as it evolves, a spinning attack that hits everything nearby, and later learns Psybeam, Dazzling Gleam, Calm Mind and Psychic. With 86 base Special Attack and 65 Defense it is a modest special attacker that is mostly on its way to Hatterene.

Name origin

Hattrem may blend 'hat' and 'tremble'. The Japanese name is Tebrim (テブリム), possibly from teburi ('hand gesture') and 'brim'.

Design inspiration

Hattrem resembles a witch, with a witch's hat made from its own hair, which may echo the folk belief that a witch's power lies in her hair. Bulbapedia also suggests a witch's ladder, a charm made from knotted, corded or beaded hair. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.

Evolution notes

Hattrem evolves from Hatenna at level 32 and into Hatterene at level 42.

In the games

Hattrem is a wild Pokémon found in places such as Dusty Bowl and Glimwood Tangle in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Liko's Hatenna evolves into Hattrem in 'Hatenna and the Otherworldly' to face three angry wild Annihilape. A Trainer's Hattrem first appears in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!'.

Fun facts

  • Liko's Hattrem first Terastallised, into a Psychic type, in 'The Pokémon Center Lady', as it tried to cure a Vileplume afflicted by Laquium.
  • Bulbapedia's Morgrem page notes that Hattrem and Morgrem, the counterpart middle stages, coincidentally both end their names in '-rem'.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Hattrem first appears in 'Rumble!! The Horrific Darkest Day' as Bede's newly evolved Hatenna.
