Lore
Biology
Heatran is a maroon, four-legged Pokémon dotted with orange and grey spots, with metal bangles on its legs and an iron mask over its face. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 430 kg. The Pokédex says boiling, magma-like blood runs through it, and that its steel body is partly melted by its own heat. Bulbapedia notes that its eyes seem to stay open even when it sleeps.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Heatran grips with its cross-shaped feet to climb walls and ceilings. Bulbapedia says legends describe it as born from the boiling magma of volcanic mountains, and that it can form a shield around itself. A Magma Stone can control and seal it in its lair; without the stone, Bulbapedia says, it would rampage and make its crater erupt.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it dwells in volcanic caves. In Diamond, Pearl, Platinum and Brilliant Diamond it waits in Stark Mountain, in Black 2 and White 2 in Reversal Mountain, and in Legends: Arceus in the Lava Dome Sanctum.
Powers
No other Pokémon is known to learn Magma Storm. It also learns Lava Plume, Earth Power, Heat Wave and Stone Edge, and its Ability is Flash Fire, with Flame Body hidden. In Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC it can Mega Evolve with the Heatranite into Mega Heatran, which is 2.8 m tall and 570 kg with a melted lower jaw and legs and even more heat. Its base Special Attack of 130 makes it a bulky special attacker, and Mega Heatran raises this to 175.
Name origin
Heatran may come from 'heat transfer'. Its Japanese name Hīdoran (ヒードラン) may also involve the word 'dragon'.
Design inspiration
Heatran might be based on volcanic remains or on magma personified, and its Steel type may nod to the Earth's metal core. Bulbapedia also suggests Mega Heatran could be based on a factory. These are fan readings, not official statements.
In the games
In Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC, Heatran is a rogue Mega Heatran boss in Hyperspace Infernal Arena, and once caught it offers the Heatranite. It first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, and Palmer, Byron and Candice each field one in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event.
In the anime
Heatran debuted in the film 'Arceus and the Jewel of Life', where it fights for the villain Marcus until Pikachu helps free it. In the miniseries 'The Arceus Chronicles', Team Galactic's Saturn captures one to power a cannon, and it rampages when the machine backfires.

- In Japanese X and Y, a woman in Jaune Plaza imitates Heatran's cry, but the English version mistranslates it as a Lava Dome Pokémon being nearby.
