Lore

Biology

Herdier is a light brown dog with a short snout, 0.9 m tall and 14.7 kg. Long cream fur forms a moustache and a three-pointed crest on its face, and a shaggy dark blue coat covers its body. The Pokédex says the coat is dense, springy and keeps growing, so claws and fangs bounce off it.

Behaviour

Herdier is smart, friendly and very loyal, and it looks after other Pokémon for its Trainer. It will not listen to anyone it does not respect. The Pokédex also says its ever-growing coat is so expensive to keep groomed that Herdier is troublesome to train.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Black and White it appears on Route 10 and in Cold Storage, and Black 2 and White 2 add it to Routes 1, 2 and 3.

Powers

Its Abilities are Intimidate and Sand Rush, with Scrappy hidden. In Sword and Shield it learns Play Rough at level 24, Crunch at 30 and Reversal at 48. With 80 Attack and 65 in each defence, it is a solid physical middle stage.

Name origin

Herdier probably blends 'herd' (as in a herding dog) and 'terrier'. The Japanese name is Herderrie (ハーデリア), which may be built the same way.

Design inspiration

Mana Ibe designed Herdier. It is the same Yorkshire-terrier type grown up, with touches of Scottish terrier and Australian silky terrier.

Evolution notes

Herdier evolves from Lillipup at level 16 and into Stoutland at level 32.

In the games

Herdier is the middle stage of Unova's dog line, introduced in Black and White. In Sword and Shield it appears in the Isle of Armor expansion, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Herdier debuted in 'Rematch at the Nacrene Gym!', where Lenora's Herdier fought Ash's Tepig and lost to Flame Charge. In 'Young Kiawe Had a Farm!', a Herdier herds all the Pokémon at Kiawe's family ranch.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Herdier is designer Mana Ibe's favourite Pokémon.
  • In 'Deceiving Appearances!', Lusamine has a Herdier keeping her company in her Aether Paradise office.
  • A Herdier owned by Lenora appears in the Pokémon Generations episode 'The Uprising'.
