Lore

Biology

Stoutland is a heavyset dog, 1.2 m tall and 61 kg, with a dark blue back, grayish-blue legs and long white-tipped cream plumes of fur on its face that trail along its body. Its small eyes are almost hidden behind its facial fur, and its light brown paws have white claws.

Behaviour

Stoutland is intelligent, good-natured and brave, and the Pokédex calls it a trustworthy partner on rescue teams that rescues people caught in mountain blizzards or stranded at sea. The Pokédex says moustache length decides social standing among Stoutland. Even a wild one warms to people in about three days, and some parents trust one to babysit.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Black and White it appears on Route 10 and in Cold Storage.

Powers

Its Abilities are Intimidate and Sand Rush, with Scrappy hidden. In Sword and Shield it knows Ice Fang, Fire Fang and Thunder Fang from the start and later learns Play Rough and Crunch. With 110 base Attack and 90 in both defences it is a tough physical attacker.

Name origin

Stoutland may combine 'stout' (bulky) with 'Newfoundland' or 'Scotland', a hint at the Scottish terrier. The Japanese name is Mooland (ムーランド), which may mix mukuinu (shaggy dog), muchimuchi (plump) and the same two place names.

Design inspiration

Stoutland seems to combine a Shih Tzu and a Maltese with traits of Yorkshire and Scottish terriers. Its talent for mountain and sea rescues may also recall St. Bernards and Newfoundlands.

Evolution notes

Stoutland evolves from Herdier at level 32 and is the final stage.

In the games

Stoutland is a Ride Pokémon in Alola, where Stoutland Search uses its nose to find hidden items. It first appeared in Black and White, and in Sword and Shield it appears in the Isle of Armor expansion, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In the film 'Mewtwo: Prologue to Awakening', Oscar's Stoutland saved his granddaughter Anna when she fell on a mountain hike. Burgundy's Stoutland made its series debut in 'Reunion Battles In Nimbasa!', losing to Ash's Palpitoad.
