Honedge official artwork

Honedge is a Steel/Ghost-type Pokémon, the Sword Pokémon, number 679 (#0679) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 2 kg.

Honedge is the Sword Pokémon, an old sword possessed by the spirit of a person it once cut down. The Pokédex says its true body is the blue eye on the hilt, and that anyone who dares to grab it has their life energy drained away.

How to pronounce Honedge

Honedge is pronounced HOHN-ej. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Honedge is a medieval-style silver sword 0.8 m long and weighing 2 kg, with a light grey hilt and a long dark blue cloth sash that works like a hand and holds its sheath. The blue gem embedded in the hilt is its eye. Bulbapedia says it is nocturnal.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Honedge forms when the spirit of someone long dead settles into a sword, after which it clings to people and feeds on their life force. Grip its hilt and it winds the cloth around your arm and drains your life energy entirely.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it typically lives in grassy plains. Honedge is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it is found in Lysandre Labs in Magenta District and in Wild Zone 4 of Rouge District.

Powers

Its only Ability is No Guard, which makes every move it uses, and every move used against it, hit. It strikes with Shadow Sneak, Fury Cutter, Iron Head and Sacred Sword and can boost its Attack with Swords Dance. With 100 base Defense but only 28 Speed, it is sturdy and very slow.

Name origin

Honedge may combine 'hone', 'one' and 'edge'. The Japanese name is Hitotsuki (ヒトツキ), which may blend hitotsu ('one') with tsuki, either 'stab' or 'possession by a spirit'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Hitoshi Ariga with designing Honedge and its evolutions, citing a deviantArt post. It appears to be a possessed sword, perhaps echoing the tsukumogami of Japanese legend, forgotten objects that come alive, or Tyrfing, the cursed blade of Norse legend. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Honedge evolves into Doublade at level 35, and Doublade becomes Aegislash with a Dusk Stone.

In the games

As the first link of Kalos's haunted-sword family, Honedge arrived in X and Y. Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC also puts it in the Steel zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Argus Steel's Honedge, his main Pokémon, debuted in the short film 'Diancie - Princess of the Diamond Domain'. Sawyer's Honedge lost to Ash's Pikachu in 'A Meeting of Two Journeys!' and later evolved, through Doublade, into Aegislash.

Fun facts

  • Discounting forms, Honedge and its evolutions were the last Generation VI Pokémon to arrive in Pokémon GO, debuting on 22 July 2025.
  • Two rings and a hole near the top of its sheath make the whole sword look like it has a face, though its real eye is the gem on the hilt.
  • Honedge is in the background of the Ironworks Chamber, the second phase of the Kalos Pokémon League stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, alongside Steelix, Scizor and Klinklang.
