Lore
Biology
Hoopa Confined is 0.5 m tall and weighs 9 kg. It is light purple with green eyes, a pink ponytail and two grey horns, and its arms float beside its body instead of joining it. It has a wispy tail in place of legs and wears three gold rings, one at the waist and one on each horn. The Pokédex says its loop can warp space.
Behaviour
Hoopa is a troublemaker that collects things it likes and drops them through a loop into a hidden home of its own. Bulbapedia says it loves foods with holes, especially donuts, and can take revenge on anyone who tries to use its power for their own ends. Legends tell of its greed: it once whisked away a whole castle to reach the treasure inside.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says its lair is rumoured to be in a hidden desert oasis full of stolen treasure. It cannot be found in Scarlet and Violet, only brought from HOME. In Legends: Z-A it comes by trade, and the Mega Dimension DLC offers one in Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its Ability is Magician. Hoopa Confined is Psychic and Ghost and learns Hyperspace Hole, which no other known Pokémon can use. Opening the Prison Bottle unleashes Hoopa Unbound, a 6.5 m, 490 kg Psychic and Dark type with six arms that, the Pokédex says, can seize anything it desires; the move changes to Hyperspace Fury. After three days it is sealed again. Unbound has base Attack 160 and Special Attack 170, while Confined is a Special Attack 150 specialist with Trick Room and Nasty Plot.
Name origin
Hoopa may come from 'hoop', and perhaps 'hoopla' or OOPArt ('out-of-place artifact'). The Japanese name is フーパ, romanised Hoopa.
Design inspiration
Hoopa Confined may be inspired by genies or djinn, and the Prison Bottle by the djinn's lamp, with the three-day limit echoing the three wishes. Hoopa Unbound may draw on the Ifrit, many-armed Hindu deities or the six-armed Gegenees of Greek myth. These are fan readings.
In the games
Hoopa is a major figure in Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC. It debuted in the Generation VI games as a Mythical Pokémon, with Hoopa Unbound arriving in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and appears in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon as the genie of the Djinn's Bottle.
In the anime
Hoopa debuted in the series of shorts 'Hoopa's Surprise Ring Adventures', playing pranks on Ash and Pikachu, and then in the short 'Hoopa: The Mischief Pokémon' and the film Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, where Hoopa Unbound is the main antagonist.
