Lore

Biology

Infernape is a primate-like Pokémon, 1.2 m tall and 55 kg, with reddish-brown fur and white patches on the chest, head and lower legs. Gold swirls mark its knees and shoulders, flame-shaped gold markings sit on the backs of its hands, and its orange muzzle and blue-lined ears frame fierce blue eyes. A crown of fire burns on its head, and it has a long tail.

Behaviour

Infernape uses a martial art of its own that involves all its limbs, with fire around its hands and feet. The Legends: Arceus entry says it battles as if dancing, and another entry says it will fight any opponent. It tosses enemies around with agility, and the Pearl entry reads its crown of fire as a sign of its fiery nature.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat for Infernape.

Powers

Infernape has Blaze and the hidden Ability Iron Fist, which powers up punching moves. It learns Close Combat the moment it evolves, plus Mach Punch, Flare Blitz at level 47 and Calm Mind at 58. With 104 base Attack, 104 Special Attack and 108 Speed it is a quick mixed attacker, though its 71 defences leave it fragile.

Name origin

Infernape may combine 'inferno' and 'ape'. The Japanese name is Goukazaru (ゴウカザル), possibly from gōka ('hellfire') and saru ('monkey').

Design inspiration

Infernape looks like a monkey with some chimpanzee in it. Its gold markings may link to Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Journey to the West, and the gold mark on its chest recalls his headband in popular culture. It may also nod to Hanuman, a monkey-like hero of the Ramayana said to be immune to fire. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Infernape is the final form of Chimchar, evolving from Monferno at level 36.

In the games

Flint fields an Infernape in Diamond and Pearl, where the species debuted, again in Platinum, and again in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Maylene uses one in her Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl rematch. In Legends: Arceus a large Alpha Infernape lives on Ramanas Island. In Scarlet and Violet it is obtained by evolving Monferno in The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash's Monferno evolved into Infernape in 'Fighting Ire with Fire!' while saving friends from Team Rocket's falling mecha. Flint's Infernape, the star of his team, first appeared in 'Flint Sparks the Fire!' and swept aside Ash's Buizel, Infernape and Pikachu.
