Ivysaur

Ivysaur is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon, the Seed Pokémon, number 2 (#0002) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 13 kg.
Ivysaur is the middle stage of the Bulbasaur line, a Grass and Poison Pokémon whose bulb has swollen into a heavy pink bud. Carrying that bud is what forces it to grow thick, sturdy legs.
How to pronounce Ivysaur
Ivysaur is pronounced EYE-vee-sor. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore
Biology
Ivysaur has blue-green skin, narrow red eyes and ears with black insides. The bud on its back sits on a short brown trunk ringed with leafy fronds. Its weight stops Ivysaur rearing up on its hind legs, so the legs grow strong instead. When the bud is close to blooming it swells and gives off a sweet scent. It is 1.0 m tall and weighs 13 kg.
Behaviour
As blooming nears, Ivysaur spends more of its day lying in sunlight, which feeds both plant and Pokémon. In Pokémon Sleep it dozes so deeply in sunny spots, still photosynthesising, that researchers cannot tell whether it is awake.
Habitat
Plains and grassland, according to Bulbapedia and the Pokédex habitat list. It is seldom found wild: in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A you get one by evolving Bulbasaur.
Powers
Ivysaur fights with Vine Whip, Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder and Solar Beam. It keeps Overgrow, with Chlorophyll hidden. Base Special Attack and Special Defense of 80 make it a capable mid-stage special attacker.
Name origin
Ivysaur likely combines 'ivy' with '-saur', and may hint at poison ivy for its second type. The Japanese name Fushigisou (フシギソウ) likely joins fushigi ('strange') and sō ('grass'), and can also be read as 'fushigi sō', 'it seems strange'.
Design inspiration
Ken Sugimori designed Ivysaur, and it is older than the rest of its line: it was one of the original monsters in the 'Capsule Monsters' pitch, years before Bulbasaur, Venusaur or the idea of Evolution existed. The line is frog-inspired, and the bud resembles a Rafflesia flower.
Evolution notes
Evolves from Bulbasaur at level 16 and into Venusaur at level 32, 4 levels earlier than Charmeleon and Wartortle.
In the games
The rival Blue's Bulbasaur becomes an Ivysaur that he uses on the S.S. Anne and in Pokémon Tower, in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), where the species first appeared. It is also a playable fighter, as part of the Pokémon Trainer's team, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Ultimate.
In the anime
In 'Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden', a Venusaur leads a hidden garden of Bulbasaur in a ceremony where they all evolve into Ivysaur together. Shauna's Bulbasaur was revealed to have become an Ivysaur in 'Tag Team Battle Inspiration!'.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia notes that no animated Pokémon series has ever shown Ivysaur losing an on-screen fight.
- Ivysaur is the one fighter on the Pokémon Trainer's Super Smash Bros. team without an HM move; Squirtle has Waterfall, while Charizard has Rock Smash and Fly.
- In Black and White, you could only put an Ivysaur up on the GTS if it had a nickname, because the swear filter found a rude word hidden inside its English name.
