Klink official artwork

Klink is a Steel-type Pokémon, the Gear Pokémon, number 599 (#0599) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 21 kg.

Klink is the Gear Pokémon, a Steel type made of two small interlocking gears that spin against each other to stay alive. The Pokédex says the pair is fixed: each gear bounces off any other minigear instead of meshing with it.

How to pronounce Klink

Klink is pronounced KLINK. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Klink is 0.3 m tall and weighs 21 kg. It is two light grey gears with six teeth each and darker centres, and two of the three symbols on the centres can pass for eyes and the last for a mouth, so every rotation looks like a face. The Pokédex says it generates the energy it needs by interlocking its two bodies and spinning.

Behaviour

A Klink is never alone: its two gears mesh well only with each other, and Bulbapedia says a joined pair cannot take on new partners without coming apart.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Klink is generally found in caves, and that Professor Juniper dates the first recorded evidence of it to around 100 years ago in Chargestone Cave, where she believes it suddenly appeared.

Powers

Klink has the Abilities Plus and Minus, with Clear Body hidden. It zaps with Thunder Shock and Charge Beam and grips with Vise Grip. Its best base stat is Defense 70, so it is mostly a Pokémon that waits to evolve.

Name origin

Klink may come from 'clink', the sound of metal lightly striking metal, and may also involve 'link' or 'click'. The Japanese name is Giaru (ギアル), which may come from 'gear'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits the idea for the Klink line to Ken Sugimori and the designs to Keiko Moritsugu, citing an archived tweet. Klink seems modelled on two meshing gears, perhaps spur, helical or herringbone ones.

Evolution notes

Klink evolves into Klang at level 38. Like the rest of its line it is genderless.

In the games

Players meet Klink in Chargestone Cave in Black and White, its first game. It is available in Sword and Shield, including Max Raid Battles, but it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Klink, Klang and Klinklang debuted together in the two Victini films as the machines of a man named Mannes, who uses them to power a Harvest Festival music machine, do yard work and fly his helicopter. Virgil also uses a Klink to power his helicopter in the special Mewtwo: Prologue to Awakening.

Fun facts

  • In its Generation V battle animation, Klink's faces spin faster than its gear teeth, unlike its evolutions, whose gears and faces turn at the same speed.
  • Klink is absent from Pokémon Pokopia, but it makes a cameo there as the Settings icon.
  • In the Unova horoscope, June belongs to Klink.
  • The Shield Pokédex suggests Klink may have inspired the first gears that people ever invented.
