Lore

Biology

Krokorok measures 1 m and weighs 33.4 kg. It is a mostly tan crocodile with a pink belly, a black back and six thick black stripes, each topped by a triangular spike on its back. Its small eyes sit inside a thick black membrane, and Bulbapedia says it is classed as a quadruped but more often seen on two legs.

Behaviour

Krokorok moves in groups of a few, led by a female while the males bring the food. The Pokédex says it hates getting cold, so on chilly nights it digs deep into the sand and barely moves, despite its night vision. It buries some of its prey as emergency meals when a hunt fails.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Krokorok prefers deserts. In Scarlet and Violet you evolve a Sandile or meet one in 4 star Tera Raid Battles, and in The Indigo Disk it is wild in the Terarium's Savanna Biome.

Powers

Like Sandile, it has Intimidate or Moxie, with Anger Point hidden. It adds Foul Play to its Bite and Crunch, and learns Earthquake at level 42. With 82 base Attack and 74 Speed it hits harder than Sandile without Krookodile's bulk.

Name origin

Krokorok may combine 'crocodile', 'rock' and 'crook'. The Japanese name is Waruvile (ワルビル), possibly from warui ('bad'), 'crocodile' and 'vile', and perhaps gavial.

Design inspiration

Krokorok seems to be modelled on crocodiles, in particular the Nile crocodile and the slender-snouted crocodile. Bulbapedia also suggests Baryonyx, a fish-eating dinosaur with a crocodile-like snout, and the eye membrane could nod to night-vision goggles. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Krokorok evolves from Sandile at level 29 and into Krookodile at level 40.

In the games

Krokorok plays a small-time villain in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, where it is a crook in Lively Town working for a Krookodile boss. It first appeared in Black and White. In Legends: Z-A it lives in the Jaune District's Wild Zone 8, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Ash's Krokorok evolved from the sunglasses-wearing Sandile in 'Dancing With the Ducklett Trio!' while it battled his Pikachu, and Ash caught it in 'Battling the Bully!'.
