Kubfu official artwork

Kubfu is a Fighting-type Pokémon, the Wushu Pokémon, number 891 (#0891) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 12 kg.

Kubfu is the Wushu Pokémon, a bear-cub martial artist that becomes Urshifu only after training in one of two towers. Pulling on the long white fur behind its head, the Pokédex says, wakes its fighting spirit, and in The Isle of Armor it is the Master Dojo's 'secret armor'.

How to pronounce Kubfu

Kubfu is pronounced KUB-foo. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Kubfu said out loud:

In Japanese it is ダクマ (Dakuma).

Lore

Biology

Kubfu is 0.6 m tall and weighs 12 kg, a dark grey cub with a yellow snout, white fur patches on its head and chest, and a permanent frown under two black eyebrow marks. Two white ribbons of fur trail behind its head. Bulbapedia says a special organ in its lower belly makes 'fighting energy' through controlled breathing and focus.

Behaviour

Kubfu drills constantly to polish its technique, even turning defeats into motivation, and the Pokédex says the moves it masters decide which form it takes on evolving. Bulbapedia says it can be timid, but grows braver and more confident as it is trained.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says wild Kubfu now live in mountains far from Galar, though old records suggest they once travelled with traders and explorers. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in The Indigo Disk, in North Province (Area Two), once Snacksworth gives you a Kubfu Treat.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it loves the Kubfu Treats that Snacksworth makes.

Powers

Its Ability is Inner Focus, which stops it flinching. It learns Rock Smash, Brick Break, Bulk Up, Iron Head, Dynamic Punch, Counter and Close Combat as it levels, and Focus Punch at level 52. With 90 base Attack and 72 Speed it is an eager physical attacker, but its stat total of 385 shows it is still a student.

Name origin

Kubfu may combine 'cub' and 'kung fu'. The Japanese name Dakuma (ダクマ) may blend 打 da ('hit'), 熊 kuma ('bear') and 琢磨 takuma ('honing a skill').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Yusuke Ohmura with designing Kubfu and its evolution. It appears to be a bear cub crossed with a kung fu student in a headband, and the nickname 'secret armor' may nod to the magical armour of King Arthur in medieval chronicles. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Kubfu evolves into Urshifu using a Key Item: it either studies the scroll at the top of the Tower of Darkness or the Tower of Waters, or has the Scroll of Darkness or Scroll of Waters used on it. Bulbapedia notes that no other core-series Pokémon needs a Key Item to evolve.

In the games

Mustard gives you Kubfu as the Master Dojo's 'secret armor' after you pass his three trials in The Isle of Armor, the Sword and Shield expansion that introduced it. You then raise its friendship and take it up a Tower of Two Fists. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Kubfu has only minor anime appearances so far: an image of one shows on Ash's Rotom Phone in 'Leaping Toward the Dream!', and in Pokémon: Twilight Wings one watches Leon battle Mustard in 'The Gathering of Stars'.

Fun facts

  • From Scarlet and Violet's launch version 1.0.0 through 1.1.0, its data listed No Guard as a Hidden Ability; version 1.2.0 removed it, though no legitimate Kubfu could have had it, as HOME support had not yet arrived.
  • In the manga Pokémon Adventures, Mustard offers it to Casey first, but she declines because her team is full, so it walks with Henry and joins his team once it has evolved.
  • Unlike most Legendary Pokémon, Kubfu has a gender: 7 in 8 are male.
