Eternatus official artwork

Eternatus is a Poison/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Gigantic Pokémon, number 890 (#0890) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 20 m tall and weighs 950 kg.

Eternatus is the Gigantic Pokémon, a skeletal Poison and Dragon type that fell to Galar inside a meteorite and, the Pokédex says, seems to be connected to the Dynamax phenomenon. It is the final entry in Galar's regional Pokédex, and you face it at the end of Sword and Shield's story.

Lore

Biology

Eternatus is a long, thin, dragon-like Pokémon, 20 m tall and 950 kg, with a dark purple body and red highlights. A cage of rib-like spars on its chest holds a glowing pink core, and a see-through red film stretches between five long spikes over its head. Bulbapedia says it is the tallest Pokémon apart from Dynamax and Gigantamax forms. The Pokédex says the core takes in energy from the land of Galar to keep it active, and that it arrived inside a meteorite 20,000 years ago.

Behaviour

The Pokédex describes no temperament, only a creature that needs Galar's energy to stay active. Bulbapedia says the anime and the manga Pokémon Adventures both show it as not truly malicious, its rampages partly down to being unable to control its own power; in the anime it later becomes calm and guards Galar.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Sword and Shield there is only one Eternatus, waiting at the Tower Summit. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only from Pokémon HOME or an event, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its only Ability is Pressure. Its signature move is Dynamax Cannon, which hits Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon harder and which Bulbapedia says only Eternatus can learn. It also learns Dragon Dance, Cross Poison, Flamethrower and Outrage, and picks up Cosmic Power and Recover late. Eternamax Eternatus, the swollen form fought in the final battle, has a base stat total of 1,125 but cannot be obtained. The normal form has 145 base Special Attack and 130 Speed, so it is a fast, tough special attacker.

Name origin

Eternatus may blend 'eternal', 'eternity' and the Latin aeternatus ('immortalised'), and perhaps Thanatos, the Greek personification of death. The Japanese name Mugendina (ムゲンダイナ) may combine mugendaina ('infinite') with Daimax, the Japanese form of Dynamax.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests its skeletal dragon shape and arrival from space may nod to Uther Pendragon, who took his title after seeing a dragon-shaped comet, and its endless energy may echo nuclear power in monster fiction. Eternamax Eternatus, a coil topped by a hand-like head with five finger-heads, may recall the many-headed Hydra. These are fan readings, not official statements.

In the games

Eternatus is the villain you battle at the climax of Sword and Shield's story, in its Eternamax form, before you can catch it; those games introduced it. In Pokémon Masters EX it is Leon's sync pair partner, shown in its Eternamax form.

In the anime

Eternatus debuted in 'Flash of the Titans!', passing the plane carrying Ash and Goh, and Goh later caught it. It became Leon's Pokémon, as shown in 'Just a Scone's Throw From Here!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says its roars in Pokémon Journeys were built from sound effects of the movie monsters Gamera and Ebirah.
  • Its Japanese category name, Kyodai Pokémon, is pronounced exactly like Regigigas's, and only the script differs: katakana for Eternatus, hiragana for Regigigas.
  • In Sword and Shield's own model and in all 2D art, even its normal form has a red glow like Eternamax and Dynamaxed Pokémon, but the glow is missing from HOME, Scarlet and Violet and the spin-offs.
  • A Shiny Eternatus was given away online in Sword and Shield from 16 September 2022 to 1 January 2023.
