Lore

Biology

Zamazenta is a bulky, magenta-red, wolf-like Pokémon, 2.9 m tall and 210 kg, with yellow eyes, a deep-blue ponytail and tail, and deep-blue patches on its neck and forelimbs. Scars on its shoulders, hips, flank and one eye show tan beneath its fur, its right ear is half missing, and the thick fur on its head and neck looks like a shield.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Zamazenta once worked with a king to save the Galar region, and that everyone treated it with fear and respect. Bulbapedia says it is believed to be either Zacian's younger sibling or its rival.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; it says Zamazenta slept for aeons in the form of a statue. In Scarlet and Violet it cannot be found in the wild.

Powers

Its Ability is Dauntless Shield, which boosts Defense in battle and belongs to Zamazenta alone. Holding the Rusted Shield turns it into Crowned Shield Zamazenta, a Fighting and Steel type: it absorbs metal from the air to form golden armour over its body and a larger golden shield, and the Pokédex says it can take heavy hits, even from Dynamax Pokémon. Only the Crowned form can use Behemoth Bash, a shield slam, and the official Sword and Shield site, as cited by Bulbapedia, says it can bore holes through mountains. It also uses Body Press, Close Combat, Iron Head and Wild Charge. The Crowned form lifts base Defense and Special Defense from 115 to 140.

Name origin

Zamazenta follows the same pattern as Zacian and comes from 'the magenta', according to a Game Informer feature cited by Bulbapedia. The Japanese name is the same, Zamazenta (ザマゼンタ).

Design inspiration

Yusuke Ohmura designed Zamazenta alongside Zacian. It may take after King Arthur's shield, Wynebgwrthucher or Pridwen, and otherwise resembles a wolf, with Bulbapedia also noting the Iron Wolf of Lithuanian mythology. Its armour resembles barding, the armour of medieval warhorses, and the shining shield shape in Behemoth Bash may reference Sköll, the wolf that chases the Sun in Norse myth. These are fan readings.

In the games

Zamazenta is the cover Pokémon of Pokémon Shield, shown in its Crowned Shield form, and a legendary hero late in the story there. In Pokémon Sword and in Scarlet and Violet it comes only through trade, Pokémon HOME or events. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Zamazenta debuted in 'Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!', where Goh met it before it vanished. In 'Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!' it took its Crowned Shield form and fought alongside Zacian.

Fun facts

  • Crowned Shield Zamazenta weighs 785 kg, which Bulbapedia lists as the heaviest Fighting type.
  • Bulbapedia suggests the pair's sword that cuts anything and shield that resists anything may echo the old paradox of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object, like the Chinese tale of a merchant whose spear could pierce anything and whose shield could block anything.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Zacian and Zamazenta first appear to Henry and Casey in the Slumbering Weald, but the fight shows the pair are only illusions.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Zamazenta appears together with Zacian as a single Spirit.
