Zacian is a Fairy-type Pokémon, the Warrior Pokémon, number 888 (#0888) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 2.8 m tall and weighs 110 kg.

Zacian is the Warrior Pokémon, a wolf-like Fairy-type legendary hero and the cover Pokémon of Pokémon Sword. Given its Rusted Sword to hold, it becomes Crowned Sword Zacian, and the Pokédex says one strike from it can fell anything, even a Gigantamax Pokémon.

Lore

Biology

Zacian is a lean, cyan, wolf-like Pokémon, 2.8 m tall and 110 kg, with yellow eyes, a pink tail and pink braids down its sides, and a tan underside. Scars across its shoulders, hips, back and forehead show tan under the blue fur, and half of its left ear is missing. The Pokédex says it absorbs metal particles and turns them into a weapon.

Behaviour

Zacian has slumbered for many years. Bulbapedia adds that it can fly and can cast illusions, even while dormant.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it cannot be found in the wild.

Powers

Its Ability is Intrepid Sword, which boosts Attack in battle and belongs to Zacian alone. Holding the Rusted Sword turns it into Crowned Sword Zacian, a Fairy and Steel type: it draws metal from the air to lengthen its blade into a golden sword, and gains a golden helmet, wing-like armour and ribbon-like braids. The Pokédex says it earned the name Fairy King's Sword and awed allies and enemies alike, and only the Crowned form can use Behemoth Blade, which merges the sword with the armour on its back for one huge slash. It also uses Sacred Sword, Play Rough, Moonblast and Close Combat. Base Speed of 138 (148 Crowned) and Attack of 120 (150 Crowned) make it a fast, hard hitter.

Name origin

Zacian comes from 'the cyan', according to a Game Informer feature cited by Bulbapedia: Japanese writes 'the' as za, and shian is the Japanese word for cyan. The Japanese name is the same, Zacian (ザシアン).

Design inspiration

Yusuke Ohmura designed Zacian and Zamazenta, according to a tweet cited by Bulbapedia. Zacian may take after King Arthur's sword Excalibur: its feminine nature could recall the Lady of the Lake, who gave Arthur the sword, and its bond with Zamazenta could echo Arthur's relationship with his sister Morgan le Fay. Otherwise it resembles a wolf, once native to Great Britain, and the crescent shapes on its sword in Behemoth Blade may reference Hati, the wolf that chases the Moon in Norse myth. These are fan readings.

In the games

Zacian is the cover Pokémon of Pokémon Sword, shown in its Crowned Sword form, and a legendary hero late in the story there. In Pokémon Shield and in Scarlet and Violet it comes only through trade, Pokémon HOME or events. It is not available in Legends: Z-A, and in Pokémon UNITE it is playable only as a melee all-rounder in Crowned Sword form.

In the anime

Zacian first appeared as Hero of Many Battles in 'Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!', where Ash met it before it vanished. In 'Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!' it took its Crowned Sword form and fought alongside Zamazenta.
