Lore

Biology

Leavanny is a slim, yellow, two-legged insect, 1.2 m tall and 20.5 kg, with a wide split leaf framing its big round head and long antennae ending in semicircles. Its leaf-shaped hands each have a bite taken out of them, and a green leaf covers its long abdomen.

Behaviour

Leavanny is parental and protective. When it finds a small Pokémon it weaves leaves into clothing with its arm cutters and the sticky silk from its mouth, and it makes warm wrappings for young Sewaddle. It warms its eggs with the heat of fermenting leaves. Though gentle, it will not spare anyone who goes after young Pokémon, the Violet Pokédex says.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Leavanny generally lives in forests. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in Kitakami's grass and forest biomes.

Powers

Leavanny's Abilities are Swarm and Chlorophyll, with Overcoat hidden. It fights with Slash, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor and Leaf Storm, and can power up with Swords Dance. With base Attack 103 and Speed 92 it is a fast physical attacker.

Name origin

Leavanny combines 'leaves' and 'nanny', and may also nod to Levana, the Roman goddess of newborn babies. The Japanese name is Hahakomori (ハハコモリ), possibly from ha ('leaf'), haha ('mother') and komori ('babysitting').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Leavanny as mainly a bipedal leaf insect, with traits of the silver-spotted skipper, leaf-cutter ants and the praying mantis. Its clothes-making may be based on a tailor, and warming eggs in fermenting leaves resembles the malleefowl's compost nest. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Leavanny evolves from Swadloon when levelled up with high friendship; there is no level or time-of-day condition.

In the games

Burgh, Castelia City's Gym Leader, uses a Leavanny in Black, White, Black 2 and White 2, and leads with it as his signature Pokémon at the Pokémon World Tournament. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in The Teal Mask and appears in its 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Burgh's Leavanny debuted in 'Sewaddle and Burgh in Pinwheel Forest!', where it used String Shot to save Ash and a Sewaddle from a raging river, then made the Sewaddle a new leaf hood. Ash's own Swadloon evolved into a Leavanny in 'Battling the Leaf Thieves!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that Leavanny cannot learn Sticky Web by levelling up even though Sewaddle and Swadloon can; a Leavanny that knows it can be caught in 6-star Tera Raid Battles in Kitakami.
  • In the anime, the film-maker Luke's Leavanny helps him make the costumes for his films, and Ash's Swadloon once lent a hand.
  • Burgh and Leavanny are a sync pair in Pokémon Masters EX, where Burgh became playable on 18 June 2020.
