Sewaddle official artwork

Sewaddle is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon, the Sewing Pokémon, number 540 (#0540) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2.5 kg.

Sewaddle is the Sewing Pokémon, a Bug and Grass caterpillar that chews up leaves and sews them into its own clothes. That has made it, the Pokédex says, a popular mascot for fashion designers.

Lore

Biology

Sewaddle is a small, caterpillar-like Pokémon, 0.3 m tall and 2.5 kg, with a round orange-yellow head and a green body in three segments. A bitten leaf folds over its head like a hood, which it uses to hide from enemies whether awake or asleep. The Pokédex says it chews leaves and sews them together with sticky thread from its mouth.

Behaviour

Sewaddle is trying to copy the leafy garment a Leavanny first dressed it in, according to the Scarlet Pokédex. The Violet Pokédex says Sewaddle say hello by touching the sensory bumps on their heads together.

Habitat

Sewaddle is a forest Pokémon: in Black and White it lives deep in Pinwheel Forest, and in Scarlet and Violet it spawns in Kitakami's grass and forest biomes.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it has been shown eating Berries, and the anime Pokédex says it eats its leaf outfit if food runs short.

Powers

Sewaddle's Abilities are Swarm, which boosts Bug moves when it is low on health, and Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in strong sunlight; Overcoat is hidden. It fights with Bug Bite, Razor Leaf and Struggle Bug, and learns Bug Buzz at level 36. Its best base stat is Defense at 70.

Name origin

Sewaddle may combine 'sew' with 'waddle' or 'swaddle', meaning to wrap a baby in cloth. The Japanese name is Kurumiru (クルミル), possibly from okurumi, a swaddling wrap.

Design inspiration

Reiko Tanoue designed Sewaddle. Bulbapedia says it seems to be modelled on the silver-spotted skipper's caterpillar, which spins silk and folds leaves over itself. The hood-like leaf may stand in for a baby's bonnet.

Evolution notes

Sewaddle evolves into Swadloon at level 20, which evolves into Leavanny with high friendship.

In the games

Sewaddle first appears in Black and White, and Black 2 and White 2 place it on Routes 12 and 20. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in The Teal Mask's Kitakami, including 1-star Tera Raid Battles. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash caught a Sewaddle in 'Sewaddle and Burgh in Pinwheel Forest!', and it went on to evolve into a Swadloon and then a Leavanny.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Sewaddle was first seen on Yahoo's official Pokémon site and only later appeared in the September issue of CoroCoro magazine.
  • In Pokémon Conquest it does not need a level to evolve: it becomes Swadloon once its Defense reaches 60.
  • In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, a Sewaddle you meet in Capim Town proudly says its mother made its leafy outfit.
