Swadloon is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon, the Leaf-Wrapped Pokémon, number 541 (#0541) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 7.3 kg.

Swadloon is the Leaf-Wrapped Pokémon, a Bug and Grass cocoon that spends its days eating fallen leaves. The Pokédex says the forests it lives in grow especially lush, because the nutrients it makes from those leaves feed the plants.

Lore

Biology

Swadloon is 0.5 m tall and 7.3 kg, a round yellow creature wrapped in a cloak of leaves with only a crescent slit left open for its face. The cloak keeps it warm, and the two leaves on top of its head let it sense moving air and probe what is around it. Darker green leaves hang limp at the sides of its face, and the veins of the cloak show on its back.

Behaviour

Swadloon likes dark, damp places and lives quietly at the base of trees. The Pokédex entries disagree about how much it moves: one says it stays on the move through forests, another that it spends the whole day eating the fallen leaves around it.

Habitat

Swadloon lives in forests. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in Kitakami's grass and forest biomes, at Mossfell Confluence and Wistful Fields.

Diet

Fallen leaves, which the Scarlet Pokédex says it prefers once they have grown soft.

Powers

Swadloon's Abilities are Leaf Guard, which protects it from status conditions in strong sunlight, and Chlorophyll; Overcoat is hidden. It learns Protect when it evolves and fights with Razor Leaf, Bug Bite and Struggle Bug. Defense of 90 and Special Defense of 80 make it a sturdy cocoon.

Name origin

Swadloon may combine 'swaddle' (to bundle a baby in cloth) with 'cocoon'. The Japanese name is Kurumayu (クルマユ), possibly from kurumaru ('to be wrapped') and mayu ('cocoon').

Design inspiration

Swadloon appears to be based on the pupa of a leaf-rolling insect, such as a sawfly caterpillar or a skipper chrysalis, many of which fold leaves around themselves for shelter. It also resembles a walking leaf. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Swadloon evolves from Sewaddle at level 20. It becomes Leavanny when it levels up with high friendship, with no level requirement.

In the games

Swadloon first appears in Black and White, and Gym Leader Burgh sends one out in the Castelia Gym of Black 2 and White 2. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in The Teal Mask's Kitakami, including 3-star Tera Raid Battles. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash's Sewaddle evolved into a Swadloon in 'Battling For The Love of Bug-Types!' while he faced Burgh's Whirlipede, which was also the species' anime debut. In 'Lost at the Stamp Rally!', a Trainer's Swadloon tied up Erina's Axew with String Shot.
