Lore

Biology

Lombre is a mostly green, bipedal plant Pokémon with a light blue face, ears, arms and back, a red bill and a notched lily pad on its head that looks like a sombrero. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 32.5 kg. A thin, slimy film covers its body, and the Pokédex calls the touch of its hands horribly unpleasant.

Behaviour

Lombre is nocturnal, sleeping in a nest of water grass by day. It is a mischief-maker: it tugs on anglers' lines from under the water and pops out of rivers in the evening to startle people. The Pokédex says it became nocturnal to avoid competing for food with bird Pokémon.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Water's Edge, and it prefers waterfronts with plentiful food.

Diet

It eats the mosses growing on rocks in riverbeds.

Powers

In Scarlet and Violet Lombre learns Knock Off, Fake Out, Fury Swipes, Bubble Beam, Giga Drain, Zen Headbutt and Energy Ball. Its Abilities are Swift Swim and Rain Dish, with Own Tempo hidden. A 340 base total makes it a modest all-rounder before Ludicolo.

Name origin

Lombre may combine 'lotus', 'hombre' (Spanish for 'man') and 'sombrero'. The Japanese name is Hasubrero (ハスブレロ), possibly from hasu ('lotus') and 'sombrero'.

Design inspiration

Lombre looks like a lily pad crossed with a kappa, and may be a shibaten ('lawn tengu'), a child-like kappa shown in vintage figures with a straw hat and overalls. Its sombrero-shaped head, jacket-like markings and moustache-like red bill also recall a Mexican mariachi performer. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Lombre evolves from Lotad at level 14 and into Ludicolo with a Water Stone.

In the games

In Scarlet and Violet Lombre is wild around Kitakami in The Teal Mask and appears in 3 star Tera Raid Battles. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Lombre debuted in 'Take the Lombre Home', when Brock's Lotad evolved into one which the villagers of a village the group was visiting said would bring water back. In 'Goodbye, Friend!', a wild Lombre leads a pair of Zigzagoon.

Fun facts

  • A Lombre in Pokémon Square decides against evolving into Ludicolo in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, which Bulbapedia reads as liking its own personality.
  • In Scarlet and Violet Lombre learns moves up to Hydro Pump at level 64, while Ludicolo, reached with a Water Stone, has only three level-1 moves.
  • Its German name, Lombrero, seems to keep the sombrero joke too.
