Lore
Biology
Lunatone is a cream-coloured crescent with a pointed, beak-like structure at the middle of the curve and deep-set red eyes. It is 1 m tall and weighs 168 kg, yet it floats rather than walks, using psychic power. The Pokédex says its stare can also lull foes to sleep.
Behaviour
Lunatone becomes active around the full moon. The Pokédex says its health rises and falls with the moon's phases and that it brims with power in full moonlight; Bulbapedia notes the anime shows it gaining strength by absorbing moonlight. The Pokédex also says it was discovered 40 years ago where a meteor struck, though nobody has proved the theory that it came from outer space.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists caves. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A; its most recent catchable appearances are in Shield (Giant's Cap and Route 8) and Shining Pearl (the Grand Underground).
Powers
Levitate makes it immune to Ground moves, which suits a Pokémon that floats. In Sword and Shield it knows Moonblast and Moonlight from the start and later learns Psychic, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Cosmic Power and Future Sight. With 95 base Special Attack and 90 HP it is a sturdy special attacker.
Name origin
Lunatone may combine 'lunar' and 'stone'. The Japanese name is Lunatone (ルナトーン).
Design inspiration
Lunatone looks like a crescent moon crossed with a meteorite, and might also draw on the Man in the Moon. Bulbapedia suggests it and Solrock may take after the human-faced sun and moon figures on tarot cards, namely The Sun and The Moon. These are fan readings.
In the games
Lunatone and Solrock are the pair the twin Gym Leaders Tate and Liza fight with in the Mossdeep Gym's Double Battle, from Ruby and Sapphire onwards. In Pokémon Trozei! it is the symbol of the Phobos Battalion.
In the anime
Lunatone's anime debut was 'Crazy as a Lunatone', in which the Pokémon Mystery Club chased it hoping to catch an outer-space Pokémon. In 'It's Still Rocket Roll to Me!' and 'Solid as a Solrock', Liza's Lunatone fought beside Tate's Solrock against Ash in a Gym battle.
