Lore
Biology
Seviper is 2.7 m long and weighs 52.5 kg, though it is usually drawn bunched up like a squeezed accordion. It is mostly black, with yellow hexagon markings from head to tail, purple scar-like marks, red eyes and long red fangs. Its tail is partly red and shaped like a blade; the Pokédex says constant polishing leaves the edge extremely sharp and that venom seeps out of it.
Behaviour
Seviper lurks in tall grass and ambushes careless prey with its venomous fangs. Against Zangoose it counters speed with its bladed tail, and the Pokédex says the scars on its body are proof of vicious battles.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists grassland. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province, and in The Indigo Disk in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth.
Powers
Shed Skin gives it a 33% chance each turn of curing a status condition, and its hidden Ability Infiltrator lets its attacks bypass Light Screen, Reflect and Safeguard. Poison Tail was its signature move before Generation V; it also fights with Poison Fang, Poison Jab, Sludge Bomb, Crunch and Glare, and Coil raises its stats. With 100 base Attack and 100 base Special Attack but only 65 Speed, it can hit hard from either side but is not quick.
Name origin
Seviper may blend 'sever' or 'severe' with 'serpent' and 'viper', and the S may mirror the Z in Zangoose. The Japanese name is Habunake (ハブネーク), which may combine 波布 (habu, a venomous snake) with 'snake'.
Design inspiration
Seviper appears to be based on the habu, a venomous viper. Scars aside, its colour pattern is shaped much like that of the elegant pitviper. These are fan readings.
In the games
Seviper is the signature Pokémon of Lucy, the Pike Queen of the Battle Frontier's Battle Pike in Emerald, and it debuted in Ruby and Sapphire. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 3 and 4 star Tera Raid Battles, and in Legends: Z-A it turns up in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Jessie caught her Seviper in 'A Tail with a Twist', and it replaced Arbok as her main battler. It later clashed with Lucy's Seviper in 'Queen of the Serpentine!'.
