Lore
Biology
Luvdisc is a flat, light pink fish whose whole body is a heart shape, with pale lips, circular cheek markings and heart-shaped scales. It is 0.6 m long and weighs 8.7 kg.
Behaviour
In the spawning season countless Luvdisc gather at coral reefs and turn the water pink, and they nest among Corsola's branches. Left on its own, a Luvdisc becomes despondent and open to attack, and Pelipper snatch them up. Honeymoon hotels often release Luvdisc into their pools because couples are so fond of them.
Habitat
The Pokédex places Luvdisc in shallow tropical seas and coral reefs. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in all three of Paldea's seas and in 2-star Tera Raid Battles, and it returns in The Indigo Disk's Coastal Biome. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Swift Swim is its regular Ability and Hydration is hidden. It uses Water Pulse, Draining Kiss, Charm, Wish and Sweet Kiss, and learns Hydro Pump at level 46. Speed is its best stat, while its Attack is only 30.
Name origin
Luvdisc may combine 'love' and 'discus', and the Japanese name Lovecus (ラブカス) seems to do the same.
Design inspiration
Luvdisc seems to draw on the discus fish, and on kissing gourami and other fish that look as if they are kissing. Its Shiny colouring may refer to the idiom 'heart of gold'. These are fan readings.
In the games
In Pokémon: Magikarp Jump, a lost Luvdisc event rewards the player with 4 Diamonds, and Emerald's Pokédex mentions an old custom of giving one as a love token. The species first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.
In the anime
Misty and her sister Daisy each own a Luvdisc, Caserin and Luverin, which become targets for Butch and Cassidy in 'Luvdisc is a Many Splendored Thing!'. Juan used a Luvdisc against Ash's Grovyle in 'The Great Eight Fate!'.
