Lore

Biology

Bagon is a bipedal blue reptile with a round snout, triangular eyes, a yellow lower jaw with two upward teeth and three thick grey ridges running from its head down its neck. It has stubby arms, short two-toed legs and a yellow patch on its underside. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 42.1 kg. The Pokédex says its neck muscles are well developed and its head is hard enough to shatter a boulder.

Behaviour

Bagon is solitary and does not form groups. It leaps off cliffs daily hoping to learn to fly, and when it sees a bird Pokémon in the sky it grows envious and smashes its surroundings with headbutts. Some theories say the head-bashing stimulates the cells that drive its evolution. Bulbapedia notes that in the Sleep Style Dex it flaps its arms in its sleep.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists rough terrain, and Bulbapedia mentions cliffs and rocks. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Violet version wild spawn in Paldea's caves, mines and mountains (Scarlet players trade for it). In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 18, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Rock Head, its regular Ability, stops recoil damage, and Sheer Force is hidden. It starts with Leer and Ember, then learns Bite, Dragon Breath, Headbutt, Crunch and Dragon Claw, with Outrage at level 50. Its base Attack of 75 is decent, but it has little bulk.

Name origin

Bagon may combine 'baby' and 'dragon'. The Japanese name is Tatsubay (タツベイ), perhaps from tatsu ('dragon') and 'baby'.

Design inspiration

Bagon may be a dragon with touches of Pachycephalosaurus, the dome-headed dinosaur, and Bulbapedia compares the crest on its head to a mullet haircut. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Bagon evolves into Shelgon at level 30.

In the games

Bagon begins the Bagon line, introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, and a Bagon belongs to Team Rogue in Explorers of Sky's special episode 'Bidoof's Wish'. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 3-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

Bagon debuted in 'Let Bagons Be Bagons', where Michelle's Bagon tries to learn to fly and eventually evolves into a Shelgon. Sawyer's Bagon battled Spritzee in 'A Fashionable Battle!' and was later used against Ash.
