Lore

Biology

Midday Lycanroc is a light-brown quadruped wolf, 0.8 m tall and 25 kg, with a white mane around four rocks arranged like a sun. Midnight Lycanroc is a hunched, red-furred wolf, 1.1 m and 25 kg, with a mane swept into a crescent moon and pinkish-red glowing eyes. Dusk Lycanroc is 0.8 m and 25 kg, orange-gold with green eyes that glow red in battle. The Pokédex says Midday's mane rocks cut like knives and broken pieces are treasured as lucky charms.

Behaviour

Midday Lycanroc is calm and cautious, backs prey into a corner and obeys a Trainer it trusts; Bulbapedia adds that people use it to guard fields against Deerling. Midnight Lycanroc is reckless: the Pokédex says it will happily take injuries to defeat an opponent and may disobey orders it dislikes. Dusk Lycanroc mixes both, normally never barks, and is the most troublesome to raise.

Habitat

In Alola, Midday and Midnight live in Vast Poni Canyon. In Scarlet and Violet they mostly live in Paldea's North Province and in Kitakami, with Dusk Form only in North Province Area One. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Midday has Keen Eye, Sand Rush and hidden Steadfast; Midnight has Keen Eye, Vital Spirit and hidden No Guard; Dusk has Tough Claws. Midday and Dusk learn Accelerock, Midnight starts with Counter, and Lycanroc alone can use the Z-Move Splintered Stormshards. All three have 115 or more base Attack, and Midday's 112 Speed is the quickest.

Name origin

Lycanroc may combine 'lycanthrope' and 'rock'. The Japanese name is Lugarugan (ルガルガン), which may combine loup-garou or rougarou (werewolf legends), garuru (a growl) and gan ('rock').

Design inspiration

Lycanroc echoes the extinct Japanese and Hokkaido wolves, whose old link with mountains may explain its Rock type, while Midnight Form resembles a werewolf. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Lycanroc evolves from Rockruff, and its three forms cannot change into each other afterwards.

In the games

Lycanroc evolves from Rockruff in Sun and Moon, its debut games, with Midday and Midnight Forms; the Dusk Form followed in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

Gladion's Midnight Form debuted in 'A Glaring Rivalry!' and struck up a rivalry with Ash's Lycanroc. Olivia's Midday Form debuted in 'The Island Whisperer!'.

Fun facts

  • Lycanroc and Mr. Mime share the record for Abilities: each can have six different ones, counting all their forms.
  • Ash's Rockruff evolving into a Dusk Form in 'Rising from the Ruins!' was the form's debut, about three months before Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon came out.
  • The QR code in Dusk Form's Pokédex entry is really the one for Midday Form, Bulbapedia says.
