Lore

Biology

Magneton is 1.0 m tall and weighs 60 kg. It is three Magnemite joined by a strong magnetic force, usually with one on top and two below in a triangle. Each has a grey metal body, a single eye and horseshoe magnets, and the Pokédex says the group has about three times a Magnemite's electrical power. The Pokédex also says it raises the temperature by 2 degrees Celsius within 1 km (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit within 3,300 feet).

Behaviour

Magneton appears in greater numbers when sunspots flare up, and the Pokédex says many gather in high places when rain clouds form, waiting for lightning to strike. Fragile equipment can fail in areas where it lives. In the anime, Clemont's Magneton can split into its three Magnemite to dodge attacks.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Magneton lives on rough terrain, often near power plants. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it eats electrical currents, based on the anime episode 'The Poké Spokesman'.

Powers

Its Abilities are Magnet Pull and Sturdy, with Analytic hidden. It uses Tri Attack, Thunder Wave, Flash Cannon and Zap Cannon, and can set up Electric Terrain. With base Special Attack 120 and Defense 95 it is a strong special attacker with decent bulk.

Name origin

Magneton may combine 'magnet' with 'ton', and may draw on the magneton, a unit of magnetic moment, or the magnetron, a high-power vacuum tube. The Japanese name is Rarecoil (レアコイル), perhaps blending rare-earth magnets with electromagnetic coils.

Evolution notes

Magneton evolves from Magnemite at level 30. It becomes Magnezone if it levels up at a special magnetic field, or with a Thunder Stone from Generation VIII onwards, since Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet have no such field.

In the games

Magneton first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), where it is found in the Power Plant and Cerulean Cave. Scarlet and Violet's Paradox Pokémon Sandy Shocks resembles a Magneton.

In the anime

Magneton debuted in 'Sparks Fly for Magnemite', where it and a group of Magnemite helped fight off a Grimer attack on Ash and his friends. Clemont's Magneton turns up in 'Clemont's Got a Secret!' and lives at the Lumiose Gym.

Fun facts

  • In 'Get Along, Little Pokémon', Magnemite evolves into Magneton by creating two new Magnemite instead of merging with real ones, which fits the games, where one Magnemite evolves alone.
  • Bulbapedia says carvings of Magneton have been found at the Ruins of Alph.
  • In the Red and Green beta, its English name was Recoil.
  • Bulbapedia says Magneton has the 'most cosmopolitan distribution', turning up in some version of every regional Pokédex before Kitakami's, Orre's included.
