Lore

Biology

Manaphy is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.4 kg. It is a small, blue, aquatic Pokémon with stubby feet, club-like arms longer than its body, a red gem set in its chest and an onion-shaped head with two long antennae ending in small spheres. The Pokédex says 80% of its body is water.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Manaphy is easily affected by its environment and swims great distances back to the cold seafloor where it was born. Legends: Arceus rumours that it migrates across the oceans and only rarely visits Hisui's coastal waters. In the film 'Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea' it can even speak human language.

Habitat

Born on the cold seafloor, according to the Diamond Pokédex. In Legends: Arceus it is met at Seaside Hollow in the Cobalt Coastlands during the Request called 'The Sea's Legend'. Scarlet and Violet have it through Pokémon HOME, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Hydration cures a status condition after each turn in rain. It is the only known Pokémon that can learn Heart Swap, which swaps stat changes with the target, and it knows it from level 1 along with Tail Glow. Take Heart is shared only by Manaphy and Phione. With 100 in every base stat, it is a balanced 600-total Pokémon.

Name origin

Manaphy may combine mana, the spiritual life force in Polynesian cultures, with fay, meaning fairy. The Japanese name is マナフィ (Manafi), which the games write Manaphy in Latin letters.

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Manaphy. Bulbapedia says it may be modelled on sea angels, which are tiny, see-through molluscs of the open ocean, and that its Egg is similar to Turritopsis dohrnii, a species of jellyfish. These are fan readings.

In the games

Manaphy reaches the main series as an Egg: it first came from a Pokémon Ranger game and hatched in Diamond and Pearl. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness a Wonder Egg hatches into a Manaphy that later joins your team.

In the anime

Manaphy is the star of the film 'Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea', where it hatches from an Egg in May's hands and guides the People of the Water to the Sea Temple Samiya. Its first full appearance in the series came in the Journeys episode 'Getting More Than You Battled For!'.

Fun facts

  • Its Egg is the only Egg in the games with a unique sprite, and it has its own hatching animation in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
  • Manaphy closes the Sinnoh Pokédex, in the very last slot, in Diamond and Pearl, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Bulbapedia says.
  • Its English name leaked on 2 November 2006 from the internal data of Pokémon Ranger, alongside the English name of Sinnoh.
  • The Ranger games call it the 'Prince of the Sea' in British English, but the American English versions call it the 'Princess of the Sea'.
