Lore

Biology

Mankey is a small bipedal monkey, 0.5 m tall and 28 kg, with shaggy whitish fur, a pig-like snout, narrow red eyes and triangular ears. Its hands, feet and prehensile tail tip are brown. When it starts shaking and its breathing turns rough, it is getting angry, and it reaches a towering rage so fast that no one has time to flee.

Behaviour

Mankey lives in treetop colonies where one angry Mankey sets off the rest, and one that loses sight of its group rages from loneliness. Its tantrums tire it out, but the anger carries into its dreams and wakes it up furious all over again. Pokémon Sleep says it is rare to find one sleeping without an angry look.

Habitat

Bulbapedia lists it as a mountain Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and West Provinces and, in The Teal Mask, across Kitakami.

Diet

Chestnuts in Mystery Dungeon, which it struggles to peel, and bananas in the anime.

Powers

Its Abilities are Vital Spirit, Anger Point and the hidden Defiant, which raises Attack when a stat is lowered. It fights with Low Kick, Cross Chop, Seismic Toss and Close Combat, and learns the risky Final Gambit at level 48. With base Attack 80 against Defense 35 it hits far harder than it can take.

Name origin

Mankey may be 'mad' or 'man' plus 'monkey', possibly with 'cranky'. The Japanese name is also Mankey (マンキー).

Design inspiration

Shigeki Morimoto designed Mankey, and in Sun and Moon he says he followed his boss's instructions. Its pig-like nose and 'Pig Monkey' category may come from the Southern pig-tailed macaque, and its tail, habitat and temper recall baboons and snub-nosed monkeys. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Mankey evolves into Primeape at level 28, which can then evolve into Annihilape.

In the games

In the first Mystery Dungeon games, three Mankey boss Uproar Forest and strike while rebuilding your base until you supply two peeled chestnuts. Mankey first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), and in Legends: Z-A it comes by trade in the base game and is wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Goh caught a Mankey on Cero Island in 'Getting More Than You Battled For!'. In 'Distant Blue Sky!' four Mankey stole Sunny's favourite hat.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia calls Mankey a counterpart of Meowth: both evolve at level 28 and have M and P names, and in Black 2 and White 2 Yancy trades boys a Meowth while Curtis trades girls a Mankey.
  • In 'A Snow Day for Searching!' three Mankey stole Goh's Cubone's bone and lost it in a lake.
  • In 'Training Daze' Jessie and Jubei shared a Mankey at the Team Rocket Academy.

Pokédex entries

An agile Pokémon that lives in trees. It angers easily and will not hesitate to attack anything. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

If one gets angry, all the others around it will get angry, so silence is a rare visitor in a troop of Mankey. (Ultra Moon)

The smallest of things could cause it to lose its temper. Because it doesn't hold in its stress, this Pokémon can live a long time. (Ultra Sun)

Its raging tires it out and causes it to fall asleep, but the anger resonating in its dreams causes it to wake up—which infuriates it all over again. (Moon)

It can spontaneously become enraged. Everyone near it clears out as it rampages, and the resulting loneliness makes it angrier still. (Sun)

When Mankey starts shaking and its nasal breathing turns rough, it's a sure sign that it is becoming angry. However, because it goes into a towering rage almost instantly, it is impossible for anyone to flee its wrath. (Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)
