Mareanie official artwork

Mareanie is a Poison/Water-type Pokémon, the Brutal Star Pokémon, number 747 (#0747) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 8 kg.

Mareanie is the Brutal Star Pokémon, a small Poison and Water starfish that regrows lost limbs overnight, though never its head. Its favourite meal is the coral growing on Corsola, which makes it hated by craftspeople who work with fallen Corsola branches.

How to pronounce Mareanie

Mareanie is pronounced muh-REE-nee. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Mareanie is an echinoderm, 0.4 m tall and 8 kg, with a stalk-like purple body, blue eyes and three pointed teeth. Ten light blue tentacles covered in purple spines hang from its head, which is crowned by a poisonous spike. The Pokédex says it stabs prey with the spike, then finishes the weakened victim with its tentacles, and that its sting causes numbness followed by an unbearable itch.

Behaviour

Mareanie lives in groups, and Bulbapedia says Bruxish hunts it. In the anime it clamps itself onto a target with every tentacle and pumps poison through its spines. The Pokédex says the legs it loses taste far too bitter to eat.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat list; Bulbapedia says it crawls over beaches and the sea floor. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the East Paldean Sea.

Diet

It eats the branches that grow on Corsola, and broken-off Pincurchin spines, even though they shock it. In Galar, the Pokédex says, Mareanie has not yet learned that Corsola branches are delicious.

Powers

Its Ability can be Merciless, which makes its attacks critical hits against poisoned targets, or Limber, with Regenerator hidden. It stings with Poison Sting and Venoshock, sets Toxic Spikes, heals with Recover and learns Liquidation and Poison Jab. Defense of 62 is its best stat, so it is modest on its own.

Name origin

Mareanie may blend 'marine' and 'meanie'. The Japanese name is Hidoide (ヒドイデ), which may combine hidoi ('cruel') and hitode ('sea star').

Design inspiration

Mareanie appears to be based on the crown-of-thorns starfish, a venomous species that eats coral polyps much as Mareanie eats Corsola. The pointed top of its head seems to echo a crown.

Evolution notes

Mareanie evolves into Toxapex at level 38.

In the games

Mareanie first appears in Sun and Moon, on Route 9 and in the Melemele Sea through SOS Battles. It can also be found in Sword and Shield and in Scarlet and Violet, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

James caught a female Mareanie in 'The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!', and she is devoted to him. Wild Mareanie in the same episode scared off the Corsola that Ash wanted to catch.

Fun facts

  • Besides Mareanie and Toxapex, no known Pokémon can have the Ability Merciless.
  • When a wild Corsola calls Mareanie as an ally in an SOS Battle, Mareanie attacks the Corsola instead of the player's Pokémon.
  • Players in Japan could receive a special Easter Mareanie Egg in Sun and Moon between 18 March and 9 April 2017.
