Lore

Biology

Marshtomp is an amphibious, salamander-like Pokémon, 0.7 m tall and 28 kg, with light blue skin, an orange belly and an angular black fin on its head. Its eyes are small and orange, with orange gills at the ends of its cheeks, and it has long arms ending in three-fingered hands and two black tail fins. Its hind legs are so well developed that, the Pokédex says, it can walk on them alone.

Behaviour

Marshtomp is at its best on muddy ground with poor footing, where it quickly overwhelms foes that are struggling to move. Its skin must stay moist, so when the tide is out it plays in beach mud to restore its fluids. It sleeps buried in mud.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge, and Bulbapedia places Marshtomp in swamps and other wetlands. In Scarlet and Violet it comes from evolving a Mudkip in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Torrent boosts its Water moves when its HP is low, and Damp is hidden. It learns Mud Shot as it evolves, then Water Pulse, Rock Slide, Muddy Water at level 40 and Hydro Pump at level 55, and can use Earthquake by TM. Base Attack 85, with 70 in each of HP, Defense and Special Defense, makes it a sturdy physical attacker.

Name origin

Marshtomp may combine 'marsh' and 'stomp'. The Japanese name is Numacraw (ヌマクロー), which may mix 沼 numa (swamp) with 'crawfish', 'crawl' or 'claw'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Marshtomp appears to be based on a mudpuppy or mudskipper. The single fin on its head recalls the helmet of a Roman murmillo gladiator, or a Greek Corinthian helmet with a horsehair crest. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Marshtomp evolves from Mudkip at level 16 and into Swampert at level 36.

In the games

Marshtomp is the middle stage of Professor Birch's Mudkip, first seen in Ruby and Sapphire. It appeared in Max Lair through Sword and Shield's Expansion Pass, and in Legends: Z-A it is found only in the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose's Water-type and Ground-type wild zones.

In the anime

Brock's Mudkip evolved into a Marshtomp in 'A Chip Off the Old Brock', and it stayed on his team until he left it in Pewter City. In 'Up to Your Neck!', Ash and Goh freed a Marshtomp trapped in dry mud.

Fun facts

  • Water and Ground leave Marshtomp with one weakness, Grass, which hits for four times damage; Bulbapedia says that is the fewest weaknesses of any typing containing one of the three starter types.
  • In 'Lights, Camerupt, Action!', Max remembers a childhood film in which a Marshtomp played an Air Force pilot who proved to be an alien superhero.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Ruby's Mudkip, nicknamed Mumu, evolves into a Marshtomp on arrival in Slateport City, and Ruby is delighted to film it.
