Lore

Biology

Mewtwo is a tall humanoid with grey skin, a long purple tail, a purple belly, two short horns and a hint of cat about its face. A tube runs from the back of its skull down to its spine. It is 2.0 m tall and weighs 122 kg. Journals in Kanto's Pokémon Mansion say a scientist created it by modifying a clone of Mew, and the Pokédex says years of gene splicing gave it enormous power and a cold, savage nature. It broke free and destroyed the laboratory on its way out.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Mewtwo has the most savage heart of any Pokémon. It stays motionless to save energy for battle and, having been made to fight, thinks only of winning. It is rarely seen and is said to rest in a cave nobody has found. In the film 'Mewtwo Strikes Back' it begins full of fury, but by the end it is shown to be caring and protective.

Habitat

In the first games a single Mewtwo waits at the bottom of Cerulean Cave. The Pokédex habitat list simply calls it rare.

Powers

Mewtwo's mind is its weapon: Psychic, Aura Sphere, Recover and Future Sight, plus Psystrike, which only Mewtwo learns. In the anime it levitates, reads and controls minds, erases memories and whips up world-wrecking storms. It can Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic and Fighting, built for physical attacks) or Mega Mewtwo Y (pure Psychic, with even more special power). With 154 base Special Attack and 130 base Speed it is a blisteringly fast special attacker.

Name origin

Mewtwo combines 'Mew', the Pokémon it was cloned from, with 'two', and may also hint at 'mutant'. The Japanese name Mewtwo (ミュウツー) is built the same way.

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Mewtwo. Like Mew it mixes cat and embryo, scaled up and given a touch of grey alien and salamander, and the tail looks like an umbilical cord. Tomohiro Kitakaze designed Mega Mewtwo Y.

In the games

Mewtwo is the hidden final challenge after the Pokémon League, first met in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In the Episode RR story of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Giovanni uses one, and it Mega Evolves into X or Y depending on the version. In Legends: Z-A one appears at Lysandre Labs once a Mystery Gift is activated; in Scarlet and Violet it arrives via Pokémon HOME or an event.

In the anime

Its big role is in 'Mewtwo Strikes Back', the first Pokémon film, and the sequel 'Mewtwo Returns'. A different Mewtwo Mega Evolves in 'Genesect and the Legend Awakened', and in 'Getting More Than You Battled For!' one accepts a challenge from Ash and Goh and beats them easily.
