Lore

Biology

Mightyena resembles a wolf crossed with a hyena, 1 m tall and 37 kg. Its short fur is mostly grey, broken by black on the lower legs and tail and by two thick, shaggy black strips that run back from behind its eyes along its body. It has red eyes with yellow whites, dark triangular streaks below them, diamond-shaped ears and a red nose.

Behaviour

Before it attacks, Mightyena growls deeply and flattens its body, giving fair warning. It lives in a strict pack and, the Emerald Pokédex says, never defies its leader's orders. Bulbapedia adds that, as shown in the film Zoroark: Master of Illusions, it likes to lick the faces of people it is fond of.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists grasslands, and Bulbapedia adds savannas. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Kitakami in The Teal Mask, including four-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Intimidate lowers a foe's Attack as Mightyena enters battle, Quick Feet raises its Speed with a status condition, and the hidden Ability Moxie raises Attack after a knockout. It learns Snarl on evolving, and Crunch, the three Fangs, Sucker Punch and Play Rough in Scarlet and Violet. With 90 base Attack it hits harder than Poochyena but is middling elsewhere.

Name origin

Mightyena may combine 'mighty' and 'hyena'. The Japanese name is Graena (グラエナ), which may mix 'grand', 'growl' and 'hyena'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Mightyena as a hyena, perhaps a brown hyena, with a mane that may come from the striped hyena's dorsal mane. Dog breeds such as the German Shepherd may also have influenced it. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Mightyena evolves from Poochyena at level 18 and has no further evolution.

In the games

Players can find Mightyena with the Poké Radar on Routes 214 and 215 in Brilliant Diamond. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire as the evolved form of Poochyena, the wild Pokémon that attacks Professor Birch at the start, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Katrina's four Mightyena debuted in 'A Bite to Remember', and from 'A Three Team Scheme!' onwards Team Magma Grunts used several as their main Pokémon. In Zoroark: Master of Illusions, Joe's Mightyena helped Tammy's Tangrowth catch Zorua.
