Lore

Biology

Zigzagoon is a small, raccoon-like quadruped with bristly brown and cream zigzag stripes, a dark eye mask and a spiky tail. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 17.5 kg. Galarian Zigzagoon is black and white, with red eyes in a star-shaped mask and a long pink tongue. The Pokédex says it may play dead to fool foes.

Behaviour

Zigzagoon wanders everywhere because it is so curious, rubbing its nose along the ground and leaving zigzag footprints. It rubs its stiff back fur on tree trunks to mark its territory, and the Pokédex says it is good at turning up items in grass and even underground. Outside Galar it is friendlier and calmer; Galarian Zigzagoon runs into other Pokémon on purpose to start fights.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Grassland, and Bulbapedia says Galarian Zigzagoon roam Galar's fields, forests and towns.

Powers

Zigzagoon has Pickup, which can collect items after battle, or Gluttony, which eats a held Berry early; Quick Feet is hidden. In Sword and Shield it learns Tackle, Headbutt, Take Down, Belly Drum and Double-Edge. Its 240 base total, with Speed 60 its best stat, makes it a starting-route item collector.

Name origin

Zigzagoon may combine 'zigzag' and 'raccoon'. The Japanese name is Jiguzaguma (ジグザグマ), possibly from 'zigzag' plus araiguma ('raccoon') or anaguma ('badger').

Design inspiration

Its names, category and fur pattern suggest a raccoon, while Bulbapedia says its shape and brown colour were inspired by the Japanese badger. The tanuki, whose folklore involves drumming on the belly, may also play a part, much as Zigzagoon learns Belly Drum. James Turner designed the Galarian form, which appears to follow the European badger.

Evolution notes

Zigzagoon evolves into Linoone at level 20. Galarian Zigzagoon follows its own branch through Galarian Linoone and ends as Obstagoon.

In the games

In Emerald a wild Zigzagoon is what attacks Professor Birch in the opening scene. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire on early Hoenn routes, and Galarian Zigzagoon is wild in Sword and Shield. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In 'Goodbye, Friend!', two Zigzagoon try to steal Ash's backpack but are warded off by Goh's Raboot, which later befriends them. In 'Candid Camerupt!', Victor Winstrate's Zigzagoon beats Brock's Mudkip with Thunderbolt.

Fun facts

  • In an interview, Ken Sugimori said Zigzagoon's name was thought up before its design was drawn.
  • Ruby and Sapphire players could get a Shiny Zigzagoon, the Berry Program Update Zigzagoon, which patched the games' Berry glitch; the United States release ran from 1 March 2004 to 22 April 2007.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Zigzagoon and Relicanth are the only two Pokémon missing from the Hoenn Pokérap.
