Lore

Biology

Morgrem is a lanky imp, 0.8 m tall and 12.5 kg, magenta above and light green below, divided by a zig-zag line. Like Impidimp it has big ears and eyes, a purple tongue, long white fangs and a single-nostril nose, but its pupils are red. Its long black hair has a fringe over the right eye and ends in a shape like a pole arm.

Behaviour

Morgrem prefers dirty tactics such as ambushes, says the Scarlet Pokédex, because it lacks confidence in its brawn. The Pokédex says it lures people into the woods with sly cunning, and some believe it can make crops grow. Like Impidimp it feeds on negative emotions, and the Violet entry says people prone to gloomy thinking are fond of it.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in the woods. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's Tagtree Thicket and in Kitakami's Wilds and Timeless Woods.

Powers

Its Abilities are Prankster and Frisk, with Pickpocket hidden. False Surrender is its signature move: it pretends to bow, then stabs with its hair in an attack that never misses, and Bulbapedia says that, as far as is known, only Morgrem and Grimmsnarl can learn it. It also uses Fake Out, Sucker Punch and Dark Pulse. With 75 base Special Attack and 70 Speed it is a modest middle stage.

Name origin

Morgrem may blend 'morbid' or 'morgue' with 'gremlin', and perhaps grem, an old word meaning 'to anger', or Morgan le Fay, an enchantress from Arthurian legend. The Japanese name is Gimoh (ギモー), possibly from gimō ('deception'), mō ('hair') and 'demon'.

Design inspiration

Morgrem seems to be based on mischievous European folk creatures such as imps, goblins and gremlins. Bulbapedia notes similarities to the redcap, a ruthless goblin of English legend armed with a sickle or polearm, like the shape of Morgrem's hair. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.

Evolution notes

Morgrem evolves from Impidimp at level 32 and into Grimmsnarl at level 42.

In the games

Morgrem is a wild Pokémon found in Glimwood Tangle and Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Morgrem debuted in 'Just a Scone's Throw From Here!', where one comes out of the Rocket Prize Master for James and then loses to Goh's Inteleon.
