Lore
Biology
Munkidori is a blue, male-only monkey, 1 m tall and 12.2 kg, with long black fur over most of its body, yellow eyes, slicked-back head hair and sandal-like feet. An arrowhead pattern marks its bare chest, and a magenta chain wraps around its head like a headband.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Munkidori prefers to stay out of harm's way and make foes dizzy with psychokinesis. Bulbapedia, citing the game's Map Mission Guide, says Kitakami locals worship it in the hope of success in life and of everything being hunky-dory. Bulbapedia also calls it greedy and manipulative, though it gets along well with the other two heroes.
Habitat
Canon gives no natural habitat. In The Teal Mask it waits in Wistful Fields in Kitakami and can be caught once you have finished the expansion's main story.
Powers
Its Ability Toxic Chain gives its moves a chance to badly poison the target, and the hidden Frisk reveals the opponent's held item. It attacks with Psychic, Sludge Wave and Poison Jab, boosts itself with Nasty Plot and lands Future Sight and the pivoting Parting Shot. With 130 base Special Attack and 106 Speed it is a fast special attacker.
Name origin
Munkidori may combine 'monkey' and 'hunky-dory', slang for 'all is well'. The Japanese name is Mashimashira (マシマシラ), possibly from mashi ('better, increasing') and mashira, an archaic word for monkey.
Design inspiration
Munkidori may be a Japanese macaque, and its Shiny form has a tanned coat like one; Bulbapedia points to the northern macaques of Aomori in Tōhoku, the region that inspires Kitakami. Its slicked-back hair may recall the chonmage topknot, its mischievous mind powers may nod to the satori, a mind-reading monkey yokai, and the chain resembles a hachimaki headband. These are fan readings.
In the games
Munkidori plays a major part in The Teal Mask, the Kitakami expansion for Scarlet and Violet, where it is number 198 in the Kitakami Pokédex. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Munkidori appears in Pokémon Horizons as a silhouette first and then in person alongside the rest of the Loyal Three at Kitakami Hall.
