Lore
Biology
Noivern is 1.5 m tall and weighs 85 kg. It is mostly black with a purple belly, turquoise wing skin, a white mane round its neck and a big red V-shaped nose. Its large ears look like loudspeakers, and each wing has three red claws on its middle joint. Its long tail ends in two spines. The Pokédex says the waves from its ears can pulverise a large boulder.
Behaviour
Noivern is hot-blooded. The Pokédex calls it cruel and says it torments enemies that cannot see in the dark; the Violet entry adds that even Hydreigon are terrified of it there. Yet a gift of its favourite ripe fruit makes it suddenly tame, and in light it avoids battle.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it flies out on moonless nights and does not name a habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's North Province, and in Legends: Z-A around Lumiose and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Its Abilities are Frisk and Infiltrator, with Telepathy hidden. It learns Dragon Pulse the moment it evolves, then Hurricane at 56 and the 140-power Boomburst at 62, which suits a sound specialist. With base Speed of 123 and Special Attack of 97, it is a very fast special attacker.
Name origin
Noivern may combine 'noise' and 'wyvern'. The Japanese name is Onvern (オンバーン), which may blend 音 on ('sound'), 音波 onpa ('sound wave') and ワイバーン, 'wyvern'.
Design inspiration
Noivern appears to combine a wyvern with a long-eared, fruit or leaf-nosed bat, plus a loudspeaker or tweeter. Bulbapedia suggests gargoyles and, more loosely, Dracula, whose name comes from the Latin for 'dragon'. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Noivern evolves from Noibat at level 48 and does not evolve further.
In the games
Noivern is reached by evolving Noibat in X and Y, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles.
In the anime
Ash's Noibat evolved into Noivern in 'An Electrifying Rage!' while saving Hawlucha and fighting a Zapdos. Alexa's Noivern debuted in 'Celebrating the Hero's Comet!'.
