Nymble official artwork

Nymble is a Bug-type Pokémon, the Grasshopper Pokémon, number 919 (#0919) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 1 kg.

Nymble is the Grasshopper Pokémon, a tiny Bug type that keeps a pair of oversized legs folded away until it needs to leap more than 10 m (30 ft) into the air. The Violet Pokédex says the jump lets it dodge an attack and hit back in the same movement.

How to pronounce Nymble

Nymble is pronounced NIM-bul. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Nymble is a grey, oblong grasshopper, 0.2 m tall and 1 kg, with stubby antennae, a body split into segments and cross-shaped pupils in its yellow compound eyes. Its two front pairs of legs are small. The third pair is far larger, with light grey rings at the joints, and it usually keeps them folded up.

Behaviour

When it is in a tough spot, Nymble unfolds those big legs and jumps over 10 m (30 ft), according to the Scarlet Pokédex. The Violet Pokédex calls it highly skilled at a fighting style that uses jumping to dodge incoming attacks while still dealing damage. Bulbapedia notes that, unlike most grasshoppers, it cannot fly.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the south of Paldea and in part of the West Province, and it also turns up in 1-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Ability is Swarm, which boosts Bug moves when its health is low, or the hidden Tinted Lens, which doubles damage from not-very-effective moves. It learns Struggle Bug early, then Double Kick and Bug Bite, and at level 41 First Impression, a strong Bug move that only works on the first turn after it enters battle. With base Attack 46 and Speed 45 it is a modest fighter until it evolves.

Name origin

Nymble may combine 'nymph', the young stage of an insect, with 'nimble'. The Japanese name is Mamebatta (マメバッタ), possibly from mame, a prefix meaning 'small', and batta, 'grasshopper'.

Design inspiration

Nymble looks like a grasshopper. Since it cannot fly, Bulbapedia suggests a grasshopper: either a meadow grasshopper or one in the nymph stage, which its English name hints at. The way its third legs fold up resembles the navaja, a Spanish folding knife. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Nymble evolves into Lokix at level 24.

In the games

Nymble is a Bug type found in the south of Paldea in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A wild Nymble made the species' debut in the Pokémon Horizons episode 'Put Your Heart Into It!'.
