Lore

Biology

Spidops is a net-casting spider that stands in a humanoid pose, 1.0 m tall and 16.5 kg, with eight slender legs bunched into pairs. Its body is mainly a beige-brown, with pine green on the face, arms and chest, and the chest pattern looks like a vest or overalls. It has large black eyes and pedipalps that look like a moustache, and its cylindrical abdomen is banded in white silk like a spool of thread.

Behaviour

Spidops is a covert ambush hunter. The Pokédex says it clings to branches and ceilings by its threads and moves silently, and Bulbapedia adds that it spins a net between its upper legs to smother prey. Bulbapedia also says it spars with its rival Scyther to protect its Tarountula young.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. Serebii lists it in Paldea's forest and bamboo biomes, in parts of East, North and West Province, Tagtree Thicket and Socarrat Trail.

Powers

Its signature move is Silk Trap, which shields it and lowers the Speed of any attacker that makes direct contact; Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn it. It also uses Sticky Web, Circle Throw, Throat Chop and Struggle Bug. Its Ability is Insomnia, with Stakeout hidden. With base Defense 92 and Special Defense 86 it is a slow, sturdy blocker.

Name origin

Spidops may combine 'spider', 'spy' and 'ops' (operations), and possibly Deinopis, a genus of ogre-faced spiders. The Japanese name is Wanaider (ワナイダー), possibly wana ('trap'), 'spider' and Schneider, German for 'tailor'.

Design inspiration

Spidops may be based on ogre-faced or net-casting spiders, which keep their legs bunched in pairs and cast nets. Its wooden-puppet look suggests marionettes, its weaving may nod to cat's cradle, and its eyes and chest plate resemble the gear of special-forces soldiers and film spies. Bulbapedia also notes a possible link to the tsuchigumo, spider-like yōkai from Japanese folklore. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Tarountula evolves into Spidops at level 15.

In the games

Spidops evolves from Tarountula and also appears in 3-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Spidops debuted in the Horizons episode 'Farewell, Sprigatito?', where it attacked a group of Sprigatito in a flashback and later fought Liko's Sprigatito in the present.
