Omanyte is a Rock/Water-type Pokémon, the Spiral Pokémon, number 138 (#0138) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 7.5 kg.

Omanyte is the Spiral Pokémon, a Rock and Water type that went extinct long ago and was brought back from a Helix Fossil. The Pokédex says some revived Omanyte have escaped or been released into the wild, and the species is now becoming a problem.

Lore

Biology

Omanyte is a small shelled sea creature, 0.4 m tall and 7.5 kg, with a sky-blue body, a pale yellow spiral shell and ten tentacles. Bulbapedia likens it to an ammonite or a nautilus. The Pokédex says it paddles by twisting its tentacles and kept air in its shell to change its depth.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Omanyte looks as though it is simply drifting along, and when threatened it pulls back inside its tough shell. It was prey rather than a hunter: the Pokédex says its fossils carry bite marks from Archeops, and Bulbapedia adds that Carracosta hunted it too.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Helix Fossils are dug up in places that used to be ocean floor, and its habitat category is Sea.

Diet

The Crystal Pokédex says plankton was its meal as it swam along the sea floor.

Powers

Omanyte can have Swift Swim or Shell Armor, with Weak Armor hidden. It learns Water Gun, Ancient Power, Surf, Shell Smash and Hydro Pump by levelling up. With base Defense 100 and Special Attack 90 but only 35 Speed, it is a slow, sturdy Water attacker.

Name origin

Omanyte may come from 'ammonite', the extinct shelled animal it resembles. The Japanese name is Omnite (オムナイト), which Bulbapedia suggests blends 鸚鵡貝 ōmugai ('nautilus') with ammonite.

Design inspiration

Omanyte is based on the ammonite, an extinct group of shelled sea animals related to squid and octopuses. It may also borrow from the nautilus, a coiled-shell relative that has changed so little it is sometimes called a living fossil.

Evolution notes

Omanyte evolves into Omastar at level 40.

In the games

Omanyte is a fossil Pokémon: players revive it from a Helix Fossil, first at the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island in Red and Blue. It appears in the wild in Sword's Expansion Pass areas, such as the Roaring-Sea Caves, but is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In 'Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon', a dynamite blast wakes a group of Omanyte and other fossil Pokémon beneath Grampa Canyon, and they chase Ash until an Aerodactyl scares them off. More live in the Ruins of Alph in 'Fossil Fools'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia suggests its Pokédex number, 0138, may nod to the golden spiral or the Fibonacci sequence because the golden angle is about 138 degrees.
  • In the Red and Green beta its English name was Ess, which Bulbapedia says comes from the French escargot ('snail'), and Omastar was Kargo.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Misty gives her Omanyte to Yellow, and it is nicknamed Omny.

It was restored from an ancient fossil. Those Helix Fossils are excavated from areas that were once oceans long, long ago. (Ultra Moon)

Omanyte lived in the seas of antiquity. Its fossils have been found bearing bite marks from Archeops, so apparently Archeops preyed on it. (Ultra Sun)
