Lore
Biology
Oricorio is 0.6 m tall and weighs 3.4 kg in every style, with a pale pink downward-curving beak, thin legs and dark eyes. Baile Style is red with a frilly flamenco-dress look, Pom-Pom Style is yellow with puffs of feathers on its wings, Pa'u Style is pink with a feathery skirt, and Sensu Style is purple with fan-shaped wing tips.
Behaviour
Baile is passionate and gets fiercely angry if given the wrong orders, Pom-Pom is cheerful and tries to cheer up glum people, Pa'u is laid back and can get so lost in dancing that it ignores its Trainer, and Bulbapedia calls Sensu calm and collected, adding that its dance draws in nearby spirits. In Paldea, the Pokédex says Baile suits the local temperament and Sensu is loved by adults.
Habitat
Each Alolan island has its own style in the wild: Pom-Pom on Melemele, Pa'u on Akala, Baile on Ula'ula and Sensu on Poni. In Scarlet and Violet, Baile and Pom-Pom live in Paldea, Sensu in Kitakami and Pa'u in the Terarium, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
It sips flower nectar, and the colour of the nectar decides its style.
Powers
Its Ability is Dancer, which makes it copy any dance move another Pokémon uses; no other Pokémon has it. Its signature move, Revelation Dance, is learned at level 40 by Oricorio alone, and its type matches the style's main type. It also flies with Hurricane, Air Slash and Acrobatics. With 98 base Special Attack and 93 Speed, it is a quick special attacker.
Name origin
Oricorio may combine 'oriole' and 'choreography', and perhaps 'oratorio'. The Japanese name is Odoridori (オドリドリ), which may combine odori ('dance'), tori ('bird') and irotoridori ('varicoloured').
Design inspiration
Oricorio may draw on Hawaiian honeycreepers, nectar-feeding birds, especially the Iiwi. Its styles seem to echo dances: Baile flamenco, Pom-Pom cheerleading, Pa'u hula and Sensu Japanese fan dance. These are fan readings.
In the games
Oricorio shows a different style on each of Alola's four islands in Sun and Moon, its debut games. In Scarlet and Violet, Pink and Purple Nectar bring out its Pa'u and Sensu Styles.
In the anime
Hobbes's Pom-Pom Style debuted in 'Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!' and beat Ash's Rowlet. Anela's Pa'u Style, Dori-chan, helped Mallow's Steenee perfect a dance in 'All They Want to Do is Dance Dance!'.
Fun facts
- The colours of its four styles match the Hawaiian words behind the names of their home islands, Bulbapedia says.
- Bulbapedia notes that just four species appear in all three Scarlet and Violet Pokédexes: Oricorio, Tynamo, Eelektrik and Eelektross.
- Because of a glitch in Pokémon Refresh, all four of its styles use Baile Style's cry.
