Lore
Biology
Pansage is a green-and-cream monkey, 0.6 m tall and 10.5 kg, with a broccoli-like sprout on its head, big ears and a tail tipped with two leaves. The Pokédex says the leaves in its sprout relieve stress, and that eating one whisks weariness away.
Behaviour
The Pokédex calls Pansage kind. It offers the leaf on its head to tired-looking Pokémon, and it is good at tracking down berries from all over and bringing them back for its friends.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it dwells deep in the forest. In Black and White it lives in the inner Pinwheel Forest and Lostlorn Forest. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in all five Lumiose districts, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Gluttony lets it eat a held Berry early, while Overgrow, its hidden Ability, boosts Grass moves when it is low on health. It learns Vine Whip, Leech Seed, Seed Bomb and Grass Knot, and later Acrobatics and Crunch. With base Speed 64 and 50 HP it is a modest early-stage Grass type.
Name origin
Pansage may combine Pan, the chimpanzee genus, with 'sage', a herb or a wise person. The Japanese name is Yanappu (ヤナップ), which may draw on yanagi (willow), yasai (vegetables) or na (greens), plus 'ape'.
Design inspiration
Takao Unno designed Pansage, Pansear and Panpour as partners for Cilan, Chili and Cress, the Striaton Gym Leaders. Because the Gym doubles as a restaurant, the monkeys were built around cooking, and their hands were designed to look like oven mitts. With its mouth open, Pansage seems to stand for 'speak no evil' in the three wise monkeys motif, a fan reading.
Evolution notes
Pansage evolves into Simisage when a Leaf Stone is used on it.
In the games
In Black and White, Pansage is the Grass partner of Cilan, one of the three Striaton Gym Leaders, who uses it against players who chose Oshawott. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.
In the anime
Cilan's Pansage debuted in 'Triple Leaders, Team Threats!', also the species' debut, alongside Chili's Pansear and Cress's Panpour. It has been a regular partner on Cilan's travels with Ash and Iris.
